Hernando de Soto landed on the Gulf coast of Florida in the spring of 1539 with some 600 men, more than 200 horses, and a herd of pigs.

He was already rich. He had ridden with Pizarro into Peru, been the first Spaniard into Cuzco, and taken one of the largest shares of the Inca gold. The king of Spain had given him Florida to conquer, and he went looking for another Peru.

He never found it. For four years his army wandered through what is now Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Alabama and Arkansas, fighting the peoples who lived there, taking their corn stores, and looking for cities of gold that did not exist.

The pigs came everywhere.

They were the one part of the expedition that worked exactly as planned. A pig needs no packing and no carrying. It walks behind the army, forages in the woods as it goes, eats whatever it finds, and breeds while it walks. When the soldiers were hungry, there was always a pig. When they lost the corn, they still had the herd. And the herd kept growing, however many they ate, however many ran off into the forest, however many the local warriors stole in raids, because once the people of the Southeast had tasted pork, they were willing to fight for it.

In May 1542, in the valley of the Mississippi, de Soto died of fever. His men were afraid of what the local people would do if they learned the Spaniard who claimed to be immortal was dead, so they weighted his body and sank it in the middle of the river at night.

Then they held an auction of his belongings. By the Gentleman of Elvas's account, the sale listed two male slaves, two female slaves, three horses and 700 pigs.

The gold never turned up. The pigs outlived him, his men and his king's claim to the land. The ones that escaped into the woods became the ancestors of the feral hogs that now number in the millions across the American South, still living on whatever they can find, still breeding faster than anybody can shoot them, still fed by nobody.

A conquistador came to the New World for gold, found none, and left behind the most successful livestock operation in its history, and nobody has ever managed to take it away from the hogs.
