Rock Creek’s defense delivered one of the most impressive postseason performances in Kansas last week, powering the Mustangs to a gritty 14–7 sectional win over Cheney. The Mustangs were dominant from the opening snap, holding the Cardinals to just 55 rushing yards and 112 passing yards, completely shutting them out after their lone first-quarter touchdown.
The secondary stole the show with an incredible FIVE interceptions on the night. Noah Valburg (pictured) put together a career performance, hauling in three picks, while Luke Skinner and Jaxon Pendall each added one of their own. Behind that lockdown effort, Cheney never found the end zone again.
Offensively, Rock Creek did all its damage in the second quarter. Tate Smith connected with Luke Skinner for the Mustangs’ first score, then added a rushing touchdown of his own to give Rock Creek the lead they would hold the rest of the way.
Now, the Mustangs turn their attention to a massive challenge: a Sub-State showdown with 3A powerhouse Andale on Friday, with a trip to the state championship on the line. #sportsinkansas
