Julian Assange has been formally tied to a Bernie Sanders-aligned network for a decade.

Assange is a founding member and Advisory Panel member of DiEM25, the pan-European left organization launched by Yanis Varoufakis. He spoke by live video from the Ecuadorian Embassy at DiEM25’s official Berlin launch in February 2016. DiEM25 still lists him as an Advisory Panel member.

In 2018, DiEM25 partnered with the Sanders Institute to create the Progressive International. Jane Sanders and Varoufakis issued the open call; Bernie Sanders publicly supported the project.

Progressive International has organized or sponsored major left international actions, including the 2026 “Nuestra América” convoy to Cuba that included Hasan Piker and Code Pink. It has also sent delegations to China that included socialist and communist-aligned groups.

DiEM25 and Varoufakis openly push a post-capitalist vision. DiEM25 has published pieces such as “Next Stop: Post-Capitalism.” Varoufakis has repeatedly described himself as a Marxist, written that “what we need is Marxism,” spoken at Marxism festivals on the relevance of Marx, and argued for moving beyond capitalism.

This is a documented, long-running association between Assange, a European left movement with post-capitalist goals, and the Sanders Institute’s Progressive International project.
