SPS believes that education is an ever-changing process. We are devoted to instilling the value of lifelong learning and to produce responsible citizens.
Education has changed a lot as every decade introduces an increased political agenda into the work.
The question is why?
In Education Navigation I provide a strategy guide to assist educators in navigating the political spectrum that impacts our work.
Coming in August 2026.
The Annual @SPS_CTE Expo is always a great experience for our students. This is our 34th year of making this happen where our students earn internships and employment opportunities. This is how you prepare the workforce!!! #SPSCreatesAchievers#WhereExcellenceIsRealized
Students and staff celebrated our final Black History Month Spirit Day, African Print Day. African prints are often known as Ankara, Kente, Dashiki, and other traditional textiles. They tell stories. They reflect heritage. They symbolize identity, unity, and pride across the African diaspora.
Each color carries significant meaning:
🟡 Gold/Yellow – Wealth, prosperity, and royalty
🔴 Red – Strength, sacrifice, and resilience
🟢 Green – Growth, renewal, and the richness of the land
⚫️ Black – The people, heritage, and ancestral pride
🔵 Blue – Peace, harmony, and love
These meanings can vary by region and ethnic group. Many African prints originated in West Africa and became symbols of cultural expression, celebration, status, and community. For generations, these bold patterns have represented history, values, and traditions passed down through storytelling and artistry. Thank you to our students and staff who wore their prints proudly! #BlackHistoryMonthInSPS
Suffolk Public Schools is proud to celebrate our Superintendent, Dr. John B. Gordon III! Dr. Gordon has been named Region 2 Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents! Since 2019, he has led Suffolk Public Schools with vision and purpose, expanding opportunities for our students through programs like the Center for Performing and Production Arts at Lakeland High School and the STEM Academy at Booker T. Washington Elementary. This regional honor reflects Dr. Gordon’s commitment to putting students first and fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and growth across our district. Next stop: consideration for Virginia Superintendent of the Year!
February is filled with opportunities to recognize and raise awareness! Suffolk Public Schools proudly honors these important observances throughout the month. Stay tuned as we highlight and celebrate each recognition.
