I remember when NAFDAC Agency used to send experts to villages/local markets where they
Teach people about the dangers of using paracetamol to cook meat, Adding dyes to red oil etc.
Becos most illiterate traders don't know the harmful effects
Guess the minister then and now??
This is what they drink every day in their region
No NAFDAC registration number.
No government approved laboratory testing.
No examination or certification by qualified medical professionals.
No pharmaceutical certification.
People consume these Agbo without knowing whether they are safe, yet when problems arise, they still blame Igbos.
If you are concerned about public health, apply the same standard to everyone. Stop the double standards, Agbo is what is killing yorugba people
From Agbo to this, these people are trying to kill everyone.
Agbo destroyed lives in Ondo, now see the level of dirtiness they are packaging for us in the name of bread making.
@NoNonsensezone, tell your people to stop killing us.
Agbo: the poison we have normalised in the name of tradition
1. If we are genuinely interested in fighting fake drugs in Nigeria, preventing kidney disease and protecting the health of our people, then we must have an uncomfortable conversation about Agbo
2. Across Nigeria, people consume these unregulated concoctions containing combinations of roots, tree bark, leaves, seeds, bitter kola, garlic, ginger, alcohol and sometimes cannabis.
3. More frightening is the adulteration of some herbal aphrodisiacs with pharmaceutical substances such as sildenafil and clomipramine, without disclosing their presence or dosage.
4. Imagine swallowing something whose ingredients, concentrations, interactions and toxicities you cannot establish.
5. One bottle is yellow.
6. Another is green.
7. Another is brown.
8. Some contain unidentified colourants.
9. Nobody tested them.
10. @NafdacAgency did not establish their safety.
11. Who takes responsibility when someone's kidneys fail?
12. I find this profoundly disturbing.
13. There is something tragic about a society that condemns counterfeit medicines while overlooking the dangers of unregulated substances marketed as traditional remedies.
14. Tradition is not a substitute for toxicology.
15. Ancestral knowledge does not confer immunity from organ failure.
16. And an erection produced by an undisclosed pharmaceutical ingredient is not evidence of improved sexual health.
17. Prolonged erections can soon become medical emergencies.
18. NAFDAC must intensify laboratory testing, prohibit unregistered commercial preparations, prosecute deliberate adulteration and remove dangerous products from circulation.
19. This is not an ethnic argument.
20. Whether the producer is Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa or anything else is completely irrelevant.
21. Neither should we condemn every scientifically evaluated herbal medicine.
22. The enemy is undisclosed ingredients, unsafe manufacturing and the commercialisation of ignorance.
23. A society that values human life must never allow the word "traditional" to become a licence to poison people.
24. And if we cannot establish what a substance contains, we have no business confidently selling it as medicine.
25. The human kidney does not recognise culture, ethnicity or tradition.
26. It only encounters the chemicals we force it to process.
