The early Church was not a loose group of Christians making up their own beliefs. From the beginning, we see bishops, priests, and deacons, the Eucharist at the center of worship, and Church leaders gathering to settle questions, just as the apostles did in Acts 15.

St. Ignatius of Antioch (Disciple of Apostle John), writing around A.D. 107, said, “Wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.” He also told Christians to remain united with their bishop, priests, and deacons.

The forms developed over time, but the basic structure was already there. The Catholic claim is simple: this Church did not appear centuries later. It grew from the Church Christ gave to the apostles.

If the earliest Christians lived with this authority, worship, and unity, why do so many people assume Christianity was meant to look completely different?

Friends, for this Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time, I want to begin with our very brief second reading from Paul to the Romans. It opens, “I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice.” Here we see Christ’s cross and resurrection—the supreme sacrifice fulfilling all the offerings of the temple—extended to all the baptized. The Church is now the place where divinity and humanity are reconciled.

“No Church in the world is more consistently hated, resisted, and attacked than the Catholic Church.”

And for Catholics, that should not be shocking.

Jesus warned His followers: “If the world hates you, know that it has hated Me before it hated you” (John 15:18).

The Church was never called to change her teaching just to fit the world.

She speaks for the unborn. She calls sin what it is. She tells us that we need repentance, not excuses. She teaches that real freedom is not doing whatever we want, but becoming holy and following Christ.

That message will not always be popular.

But being rejected does not mean the Church is wrong. Jesus Himself was rejected for speaking the truth.

So when Catholic teaching is mocked, hated, or pushed aside because it refuses to bend, we should remember the words of Christ.

The goal was never to be loved by the world.

The goal is to stay faithful to Jesus.
