It's not unusual for a little squirrel learning how to eat a nut to spend 40 minutes or more gnawing through the shell.

A young squirrel gnawing through his first nut will do it twice as fast if she can watch another squirrel to see how it's done.

Squirrels start showing interest in food at about 6 weeks and start eating at 7, but aren't fully weaned until 8 to 10 weeks (sometimes 12).
