“In Autumn last year, the Club was informed by our former Head Coach that there might be an opportunity for him to succeed Pep Guardiola at the end of the season. It became clear to us that it was his strong desire to succeed Guardiola and that he was fully committed to pursuing the opportunity, despite the fact he was under a long-term contract which he had no right to terminate.”

✍️ Chelsea's £8m first bid for Granit Xhaka isn't as bad as people are making it. The question is, what's Chelsea's valuation of the 34-year-old midfielder?

If Chelsea value him at £15m, then an £8m first bid makes sense. A second bid could be £12m and then a third bid to clinch it.

The fact that Chelsea's first bid was £8m means they aren't going to go close to £25m for him, let alone £30m.

Also, it's obvious that Sunderland are leaking the "not for sale" gimmick just to save face with their fans, but in the real world of transfers, clubs inquire from agents and selling clubs before making bids. It doesn't come from nowhere. If he's not for sale, they wouldn't bother making any bid.

I expect Chelsea to continue talking to Sunderland. The key is valuation; I think Xhaka has a price. It's up to Chelsea to match it.
