The Undersecretary of the Synod of Bishops has urged members of Pastoral Animation Teams (EAPs) in Mauritius to embrace synodality as a lived experience rather than a theoretical concept, saying the Church learns to journey together through prayer, listening, and shared mission.

Addressing about 200 participants at St. Joseph College on July 11, during the first day of her visit to the Catholic Diocese of Port Louis, Sr. Nathalie Becquart said synodality is something that can only be learned by putting it into practice.

“Just as a child learns to walk by taking the first steps, synodality is learned by living it,” Sr. Becquart said.

The French member of the Xavière Missionary Sisters (XMCJ) described her first visit to Mauritius as an opportunity for mutual learning, expressing gratitude for the warm welcome she received.

“I have the feeling that I am going to learn a great deal by listening to you,” she said, drawing on the Gospel account of the Visitation as an image of an encounter in which everyone both gives and receives.
