Preah Vihear Temple: The Aftermath of the Destruction

PREAH VIHEAR - Cambodianess saw first-hand the damages that Preah Vihear temple experienced during the 2025 Cambodia-Thailand border clashes.

Preah Vihear, which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, sustained extensive damage across nearly all areas, from the first to the fifth gopura and the ancient staircase, stretching over a distance of approximately 800 meters.

Walls, ancient stone pathways and previously restored architectural structures were all affected. Stone fragments lay scattered across the ground, with many pieces shattered into small bits, as if the sandstone had crumbled into sand.

About 70,000 broken stone pieces have been collected after the clashes, all have been catalogued for restoration.

Bomb craters, both large and small, were still visible across the temple complex. Officials from the Cambodian Mine Action Authority have been working to determine the types of weapons used by the Thai military as well as the locations where the munitions landed.

Almost 1,600 artillery shells were bombarded by the Thai armed forces onto Preah Vihear temple, accounting for 501 directions of fire.

According to the National Authority of Preah Vihear, a total of 562 areas of damage have been reported all across the temple. These include structural deformation, surface damage, projectile damage, and loss of architectural ornament.

Local officials said the destruction is so severe that conservation and restoration efforts face major challenges. It remains unclear when restoration can resume, given the extent of the damage and ongoing security concerns.

Constructed in phases since the 9th century CE, Preah Vihear is one of the most important archaeological sites of Cambodia, standing over 600 meters above sea level on a prominent Dangrek mountain range.

Please be informed of the situation along the Cambodia–Thailand border, where Thai military forces have continued their armed aggression, targeting civilian areas, in the 5th Military Region, Chok Chey and Prey Chan villages, O’ Bei Choan, O’ Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province, on December 26, 2025:

1- From 7:00am to 2:30pm, the Thai military fired approximately 250 shells into the area of Chok Chey village, O’ Bei Choan, O’ Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province.
2- From 7:00am to 2:30pm, the Thai military fired approximately 110 shells into the rea of Prey Chan village, O’ Bei Choan, O’ Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province.

The brutal actions above are indiscriminate attacks by the Thai military, a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

Cambodian forces will continue to monitor closely and remain vigilant in fulfilling their role of firmly protecting Cambodia's territorial integrity and the people.

Thai influencer Manassatian Luprasert published a manipulated image depicting President Donald J. Trump being violently drop-kicked in the face by a Thai soldier. The post received over 122,000 positive reactions.

This is not humor or satire. It is the promotion of political violence against a sitting U.S. president.
The United States and Thailand trade approximately $88 billion annually and maintain long-standing security and defense cooperation. Publicly glorifying violence against the leader of a strategic partner is reckless and damaging to bilateral relations.

This does not represent all Thai people, but it does reflect a serious failure to condemn extremist content from influential voices.

Given the nature of the image and the scale of engagement, the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Secret Service should review and investigate this matter to determine whether it constitutes a threat, incitement, or coordinated disinformation targeting the President of the United States.
