@Teachers__Unite I agree, but I think complexity is just really hard to bargain for. It might work better in the older grades when more students are diagnosed and have established histories but for primary kids, we often have so little information/data to explain their needs.
@Marzipan1969@Teachers__Unite I think we’d improve a lot of things in elementary schools if we fixed Kindergarten. K classrooms are a breeding ground for emotional regulation issues and behaviour problems. Instead we cram too many children into too small of spaces and don’t support children with extra needs.
@maggiemay9999@TDotResident@ColinDMello That’s not how it works these days. Everyone pays the same taxes to the same pool of money. You checking the catholic/public box determines which trustee you vote for. That’s it. All schools are funded with the same amount per student.
@OgieOgilthorpe0 @sirensplight @myweirdthought @MzAllieOsin1 @TheLawofWork You keep changing the goal posts. The kid nor parent care if they get suspended. Teachers have no control over who gets suspended. No one with power will use the stick (everyone has a boss who will throw you under the bus) and the kids have all the carrots they want at home.
@thismomloves Kindergarten FREEBIE!
The first 20 people to request access win images that show thinkSRSD evidence-based practices for teaching writing up and running in K.
(Just kidding, you all get access; seems more fun to offer a 'limited access' incentive)

@janet444@NateJoseph19 Moving from 3 to 4 sound blending is a big jump for Ss who struggle to hold sounds in their working memory. Additive blending may help your student.

@TsuyukiRauni@ESL_fairy Kids are coming to school with fewer self-regulation skills (due to a # of factors) and over-crowded classes aren't a great place to develop them. Then there are students with developmental delays, autism, behavioural issues who don't get the support they need to be successful.
@ThatCdnMichelle@alicekeeler Ontario certainly is having a teacher shortage (though likely not as bad as parts of the US). Thankfully we have a strong union to help protect things like prep time, lunch, duty caps, etc., but it doesn’t make up for stressful work environments/expectations and stagnant pay.
@73_Freckles @Teachers__Unite How do we cover teacher absences without occ. teachers? The system relies on a supply of (mostly) new teachers to cover absences. But many are probably forced to stay in that position for too long (2-3 yrs should be the max), and we could definitely increase itinerant positions.
@istamour @MsGaudun I think union PR is irrelevant. People are either for unions or against them. Union PR isn't going to make much difference. Most people either aren't listening or have their minds made up. Ind. teachers telling their stories will have the most impact on those willing to listen.
@MartinC330 @ESL_fairy@MsGaudun What exactly is the union's motivation for wanting a strike? And if they wanted it, why didn't they take a strike vote earlier rather than attempting to negotiate for over a year before even announcing a strike vote (which does not = immediate strike)?
@Cory_electric @MsGaudun You do realize that there is a teacher shortage, right? Who's going to teach students if all the teachers quit?Many have quit (some before they even really got started), which is one of the reasons we have a shortage.
@stephanie653117@thismomloves@HollyLanePhD I found it interesting that they started with a framework and then decided what teachers really needed were the actual lessons. 🤔
@sgibsonneve@slphiggins@thismomloves I’d rather have a teacher using a good scripted program than not teaching it at all. You’re right. It should be a starting point. Most teachers will be get more comfortable and start adapting over time. But without the program, where do they start?
@MarieJoseLeduc2@ChandraPasma I didn’t, but many did. Minimal phonics in any Gr1-3 room I’ve been in. I’m not a fan of Lecce but this curriculum is a huge improvement. It was clearly written by people who know their stuff (I.e. not Lecce). Now, its roll out/implementation on the other hand…(2/2)
@MarieJoseLeduc2@ChandraPasma It left many classrooms in many schools in
many school boards. I never learned about teaching phonics other than what I picked up through placements in K classes (basically letter sounds via Jolly Phonics). Then when FDK came, I was told to stop explicitly teaching phonics. 1/2
