You are experimenting with an “unplugged” classroom this semester. Your campus is jn Hell’s Kitchen, NYC, and one of the first times you tell a student to put away his phone, you notice the distinctive blue and yellow chat bubbles of #Grindr. What do you say?
@tfrancisco203 It was a helluva day… a guy had snorted heroin and then ran off the highway and hit a highway worker, turning bothe directions into a crime scene. A bad day all around
@soychotic “It dramatically reduced the number of tantrums in my classroom.” I didnt realize it was a novel about the first kindergarten teacher in space.
@mattyglesias Genes are expressed in environments. Early 20thC: Swimming becomes a leisure activity, American Red Cross pushes swim lessons, & public pools are built but exclude Black Americans. MidCentury: Forced to desegregate, cities defund public facilities, swimming becomes private.
@tfrancisco203 And Friday a crash on 95 shut it down entirely & some idiot took his 18wheeler on the Merritt. Unaware of that, I attempted to drive to my office in HK & get my bike in Chelsea…I spent two hours trapped in gridlock on side streets in Fairfield. 4 hours to get to civilization…
@tfrancisco203 Admittedly it sometimes feels like being exiled to the bougiest circle of hell alongside John Cheever and the cast of Desperate Housewives, & once every few years it will snow 6 inches while the city gets some slush.
@timurkuran Who are these “many professors in the humanities”? Take an English class & learn about logical fallacies: the strawman (oops, strawhuman), red herring, Post hoc ergo propter hoc, hasty generalization, question begging, ad ignorantiam, ad hominem. Quite a tally you got here!
@nlmtys We got to the beach (a couple of days late). Now he is a professional musician who today starts a DMA program at the Hart School. That’s part a dad-brag, part a message to say, “You will get through this.” Heck, a decade later, I can say we’ve been through worse.
@nlmtys …as I walked him into the pediatric emergency room at Yale-NH Hospital. Brilliant dad had attibuted his crankiness, sleepiness, confusion, & loss of “baby fat” to puberty, not T1D. We insisted he wasn’t sick, just had a condition, & he took charge of his testing & injections.
This has been a common trope for a while, in these countries without guns pick pockets are just a part of life but to an American you either get shot or nothing. So being confronted with an unarmed man who thinks they can rob you is at first bewildering to them, and then amusing
Relatively few of the Republicans mad at Ossoff seem to want to quote what the outrageous thing he said actually was, so for the record:
“While the sailors on the Lincoln fight his war, while he fruitlessly drains our munitions and oil reserves, the president sleeps through his meetings, he golfs, and trades stocks. He doesn’t want to do the job. He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the Emir of Qatar.”
