In yesterday's Rhode Island hockey shooting, USA Today, PBS, Reuters, and The New York Times — to name a few — all correctly report that police “identified the shooter as Robert Dorgan, 56, who also went by the name Roberta Esposito.”

Not one uses the word transgender.
Not one has published a single image from the suspect’s social media.

Either sex and "gender identity" are factual descriptors — or they aren’t.

Selective emphasis and selective omission aren’t journalism. They’re message management.
