Soon as she's left the room it feels bare again;
even I seem to no longer be there.
She is the light that keeps the darkness at bay,
really the only reason that I stay.
I'd be casting my gaze upon the cold sea
if for good her warmth left me.
So much hope in my breast,
open affection in my words.
She would see none of it,
only looking for the worst.
I wasn't ready for love, yet
it came to me anyway.
If only she'd come to care instead of coming to slay.

#Journey
In his youth he envisioned life as an exotic jungle to be explored, if not conquered.
Now in middle age he discovers his days to be more like overlooked flowers in a quiet garden.
He never had that great adventure, experience always just beyond his imagining.
Like a late spring.
Sometimes people don't see the harm in their behavior because their circle normalizes it. That's the power of our environment; it shapes our perception of 'normal.' Keep your circle tight and filter often ….
Driven to put as much distance between himself & demons of the past, he used to run miles all the way to the waters edge & long to keep going.
Now he just walks there to bathe in the twilight, glad to feel better memories growing.
A baptism of fire ends with some victory showing.
He had a sinking feeling that this relationship could bring him down to new depths of depression, so powerful was this allure, so deep her capacity for cool indifference.
He could read it in the ice-blue wells of her eyes that said "Go on then, dive again."
He was already all in.
The bond between a mother & her daughter is so often a powerful thing to see.
I saw much less fondness in my mother's gaze on the boy that was me.
Some walks together stay in the mind with a perfect sense of sanctuary.
Mother Nature was a surrogate guide to the child in me.
Another loud wet day between quiet times with her;
more opportunities for rude departures.
She is the train always ready to pull away again
when you were just embraced by a friend.
I'd like to believe a visitation is possible, a coming of something greater than this mere trick of the light
that falls between heaven & earth when I am desperate for a sign.
Perhaps today grace is reaching down to touch a man's soul, yet it doesn't feel like it is mine.
Ladies' night sounds to me like warm fun with good friends, a chance to dance & share carefree laughter.
Guys' night out is listening to half-truths about glory days which I regretted right after.
