To understand what China gains from its shadow support of Russia’s war against Ukraine, you first have to understand what China is: not a nation-state in the European sense, but a civilisation-state.

China is not backing Russia out of some lingering Sino-Soviet nostalgia. It is keeping Moscow supplied with just enough dual-use components to keep it fighting, but not enough to let it win. In the process, it is helping bleed the West of resources, profiting from everything the West can no longer make at home, and building an architecture of dependency aimed at the rest of us like a loaded gun.
