When Dolly Parton died, my right-leaning friends were simply sad. They remembered her music, her personality and the enormous amount of good she did for other people.

What struck me was that some of the left-leaning reaction I saw immediately turned to questions like whether she had supported Palestinians, as though a dead woman needed to pass one final political purity test before she could be mourned.

I find that bizarre.

Dolly Parton did not belong to the right or the left. She was a human being who lived a remarkable life and helped a great many people.

The speed with which some people try to make someone’s death politically useful is becoming a pretty good measure of how badly tribalism has distorted our sense of basic decency.

Sometimes the proper response to a death is simply: she lived, she contributed, she mattered, and she will be missed.
