We kicked off the incubator series of Startery’s f23 cohort today. I wanted to try something new, so I shared with students a philosophical framework I’ve been processing myself in my notes app over the past couple of years. I’ve personally been using it to help me identify opportunities for startup incubation, and thought the framework would be a great way to get the gears turning while students are coming up with ideas to work on during this cohort.

I call it the optimal polis framework, which stems from Plato’s work on poleis in a few books of The Republic.

How it works: I have the students suspend disbelief for a moment and imagine their ideal world: peaceful, efficient, and just. Then I have them compare it to the current reality they live in. Wherever they spot discrepancies between their imagined ideal world and their current reality, there’s an opportunity to build a bridge through startups (or missions) to get us to that optimal polis.

Startery’s mission will always be in pursuit of building the optimal polis: a beacon reminding us that we have the power to redefine how future societies (and countries) will be created.
