It's easy to check this, you have to listen to what words, whose words, and phrases, and tone my inner voice speaks to me when I'm wrong. Whether it supports me or drowns me out, tells me I'm going to make it or tells me I didn't do a good enough job.
To be a good skier, you need someone to teach you how to ski. To swim well, to swim professionally, you need to have a good coach. To treat yourself well or poorly, you need to be treated well or poorly. That's something you have to learn, too.
Manipulation creates a vacuum in front of the person that they want to fill. And then when we grow up, we look for people who will manipulate us. And that will give us strength, will give us traction.
Because the child has a process, a mechanism of compensation. The child wants to prove the opposite. He wants to prove that I am not the way my parents see me. I am not, I am better.

This is the worst thing you can do to a child is to compare them to other people or to put yourself as an example to them. It only causes anger and absolutely smears self-esteem.
There is such a section in NLP: Combat NLP. It's actually not very pleasant, one might even say disgusting. Especially disgusting are the people who want to master it in order to manipulate others somehow.
And you'll realize that you're not responsible for that until later. And only you are responsible for it, for your relationship with the child.
