✨Documenting a gradual decent into PhD-whilst-a-healthcare-worker-induced madness✨

[Stasia B.H. @Stasia787]

The exception to this are dieticians who work in the space usually in collaboration with a psychologists with their focus solely on eating behaviours. Because healthcare is a team sport. That’s my rant for the day..

[Stasia B.H. @Stasia787]

Gonna shout this into the wind so I temporarily feel better. HAES & anti-diet practitioners who aren’t registered/licensed psychologists, counsellors, therapists etc shouldn’t be treating body image issues, medical trauma or any other kind of trauma resulting from weight stigma.

[Stasia B.H. @Stasia787]

It’s a trend I’m seeing many more ppl charge lots of money for & it greatly concerns me. I don’t know why ppl seem to think they can do what a psych does but I assure you we do almost 10yrs of training for a reason.

[Stasia B.H. @Stasia787]

@drmollyinprog Not to mention the lack of acknowledgment that correlation doesn’t equal causation! Fat phobia has ppl forget basic science… drives me batty.

[Stasia B.H. @Stasia787]

@drmollyinprog & it’s not even published yet! Ugh. I found the article used to back rec of bariatric surgery to reduce cancer risk… it showed ppl with BMI over 30 actually had LESS cancer incidence overall 😑 they cherry picked the cancers that were ⬆ & ignored the cancers that were ⬇️ 😤

[Stasia B.H. @Stasia787]

Let’s put people at risk of death from a surgery that permanently damages their healthy digestive system, has all sorts of side effects & impacts on QOL.. because there are some cancers with a higher incidence, even though a decreased risk overall?? Fat-phobia is truly a beast..

[Stasia B.H. @Stasia787]

Turns out there is an actual DECREASE in incidence of all cancers combined for people with a BMI over 30 in this study… so overall, less relative risk of cancer with a BMI over 30.. & we’re still recommending bariatric surgery for this group.. make it make sense 😑

[Stasia B.H. @Stasia787]

I have no idea if my maths is correct, but we are talking about a tiny increase on already tiny numbers. It drives me batty….

[Stasia B.H. @Stasia787]

I just read that bariatric surgery is starting to be recommended to people of a BMI over 30 to reduce their risk of endometrial cancer…. An extra lifetime risk which I calculated to be at about 2%… 2% over an entire lifetime..

[Stasia B.H. @Stasia787]

Get your shit together people #endrant

[Stasia B.H. @Stasia787]

@DrKGregorevic Complete agree. And the multi-d Community Rehab Services that can actually help people to manage & hopefully recover form a post-viral syndrome are woefully underfunded. Would love to see all post-viral illnesses be better recognised so effective treatments can be better funded.

[Dr Kate Gregorevic @DrKGregorevic]

In 2021 I had a patient who had been extremely sick in ICU a year earlier with a non-Covid respiratory pathogen with ongoing shortness of breath, fatigue and depression. If people want to classify long-COVID as special and unique where do I send a person with identical symptoms?

[JP @thtblkcommie]

I can’t even explain the horror of reading this article. From the doctors competing over surgeries completed, to fucking rikers pimping out incarcerated folks, to patients being rushed through and leaving w life-long complications and even death. Fuck

Being disabled in academia

[Stasia B.H. @Stasia787]

@sicklybabe It is incorrect to assume that we as health professionals are the arbiters of what are “real” physical symptoms are what are not - as if tests have no error rates and clinicians are bias free.. really grinds my gears. Again I’m just so sorry.

[Stasia B.H. @Stasia787]

@sicklybabe Whaaat? This is horrific, not patient-centred and not evidence based. I have training as a pain psych & wouldn’t recommend this in a million years. It horrifies me that programs like this exist!! It will absolutely categorically make things worse for the person 🤯

[Stasia B.H. @Stasia787]

@sicklybabe I wish you had found a good one too 😔 you are 1000% correct! The mind-body link doesn’t mean “mind over matter” or that what is happening in the body isn’t real right? And 100% we need a place to express how we feel!! Suppressing emotions will not help the physical symptoms 💔

[Stasia B.H. @Stasia787]

@sicklybabe Our health systems are broken. I advocate daily to ensure this type of bull**** doesn’t happen in my corner of healthcare. I’m just so sorry that people have been subjected to this 😔
