Road to World Cup 2026 | Part 4: Group balance check β½ππ
So far, we looked at the Elo map, team strength, and which groups look strongest on paper.
Now comes another angle: how balanced are the groups?
This chart shows the Elo gap between the strongest and weakest team in each group. The bigger the gap, the less balanced the group looks.
Group H has the biggest gap: Spain πͺπΈ at the top, with Uruguay πΊπΎ also strong, but then a much bigger drop to Saudi Arabia πΈπ¦ and Cape Verde π¨π».
Group D is the opposite. Turkey πΉπ·, Paraguay π΅πΎ, Australia π¦πΊ and United States πΊπΈ are much closer by Elo, which makes it the most balanced group on paper.
That is why average strength is not the whole story. Some groups have a clear favorite, while others look much tighter from top to bottom.
In short: strongest group does not always mean most balanced group. πβ½

Road to World Cup 2026 | Part 3: Strongest groups by Elo β½ππ
In Part 1, we looked at the full Elo map: team strength plus group difficulty.
In Part 2, we zoomed in on the teams themselves.
Now comes the next question: how are those teams spread across the groups?
Based on average Elo rating, Group I comes out as the strongest group on paper, while Group B has the lowest average Elo.
For me, this is where the draw starts to get interesting. A group can look strong because it has several solid teams, or because one or two teams push the average up.
So this is not the full story yet, but it gives us a nice first ranking of the groups before we look at balance in more detail.
Next up: group balance check. Because the strongest group is not always the most balanced one. πβ½

Road to World Cup 2026 | Part 2: Team strength check β½ππ
Yesterday I shared the Elo map, looking at both team strength and group difficulty.
Today, letβs look only at team strength.
Spain starts as the highest-rated team by Elo, ahead of Argentina and France. Croatia is also in the top 10, which is definitely a nice place to be before the tournament. ππ·
At the other end, Qatar, Curaçao and Ghana have the lowest Elo ratings in the field.
Of course, this is only the starting point. The draw matters, form will change, and the World Cup always finds a way to surprise us. πβ½

Road to World Cup 2026 | Part 1: Elo map of the tournament β½ππ
Club football is done, and now we can finally turn our full attention to the World Cup. ππ
To kick off the World Cup 2026 Elo preview series, I looked at how team strength compares with the difficulty of each teamβs group-stage path.
Elo rating is a team strength rating system that updates over time based on results, opponent quality and performance level.
A few early things stand out π
πͺπΈand π¦π·look very well positioned on paper, while π΅πΉ appears to have a tougher road compared with some other strong teams.
For the lower-rated sides, the draw matters even more. A favorable group can make the knockout stage feel realistic, while a tough group can make every match feel like a mountain to climb. β°οΈ
Of course, football is never just numbers.
But Elo gives us a simple way to read the tournament before the chaos begins. β½π₯
Next up: the strongest and weakest teams in the World Cup 2026 field.
Who do you think got the toughest group-stage draw?

For me itβs R9 π₯ Peak Ronaldo was basically unfair: pace, power, close control at full speed, and ruthless finishing. The crazy part is he did it against elite defenders like Maldini, Cannavaro, Nesta, Thuram, and still made them look a step slow. β‘οΈ
