Edward Snowden recommends this operating system to journalists, activists, and anyone whose computer could be used against them.

It's called Qubes OS, and it's free.

A Polish security researcher named Joanna Rutkowska built it.

In 2006, she walked onto a stage in Las Vegas and showed a room full of hackers something that shut the whole place up.

She had built a way to take over a computer completely, using the hardware itself, without the operating system ever noticing it happened. People called it Blue Pill.

A few years later she asked herself the opposite question. If a computer can be silently taken over like that, how do you build one that survives being attacked anyway?

Her answer was Qubes.

Instead of trusting your whole computer as one single space, Qubes splits it into many separate little computers running side by side, each one sealed off from the others. Open your banking site in one. Open a sketchy email attachment in a different one.

If the attachment turns out to carry malware, it wakes up alone in its own sealed box with nothing else to touch.

Some of those boxes are built to disappear on purpose. Open a suspicious PDF in a disposable one and the moment you close it, the whole thing gets erased and rebuilt from scratch the next time you need it, malware included.

In 2016, Snowden tweeted about it directly: "It's what I use, and free. Nobody does VM isolation better."

Whonix, the anonymity system built entirely around Tor, actually runs as one of the isolated boxes inside Qubes.

That's the exact combination Snowden pairs together for the strongest privacy setup he trusts on his own hardware.

A Roman emperor ate his meals in a sea cave, a few feet from a massive marble sculpture of the moment Odysseus blinds the Cyclops.

Eventually it lay shattered in thousands of pieces on the floor of that cave, and stayed there until 1957...

The emperor was Tiberius, who ruled Rome after Augustus, and the cave is at Sperlonga, on the coast between Rome and Naples. It was a natural grotto opening onto the sea, and he turned it into a private dining hall, with pools of water reaching into the mouth of the cave and a platform where he and his guests reclined to eat, the waves echoing off the rock around them... Definitely not a bad place to host dinner.

The sculpture stood at the deepest point of the cave and it showed the most terrifying scene in Homer's poem, when Odysseus and his men are trapped inside the cave of Polyphemus, a one-eyed man-eating giant who has sealed them in with a boulder too heavy to move and is eating the crew alive, one by one.

Odysseus cannot simply kill him in his sleep, or they will be entombed with the corpse forever. So he gets the giant drunk, waits for him to pass out, hardens the tip of an olive-wood stake in the fire, and drives it into the Cyclops's single eye.

The sculptors depicted the instant just before the stake goes in...

The colossal figure of Polyphemus sprawls backward, drunk and unaware. Odysseus, the one closest to the Cyclops, and three of his men strain upward with the spike. It was carved larger than life and set in shadow at the back of the grotto, so that as the lamplight shifted, the whole scene seemed to move over the emperor's dinner.

The Roman historians Tacitus and Suetonius both record that in the year 26 AD, while Tiberius was dining there, rocks fell from the roof of the grotto, crushing several of his attendants and nearly killing the emperor, who was shielded and dragged out. In that collapse, or in a later one, the great marble scenes were smashed into thousands of fragments.

There they lay, at the bottom of the cave, until 1957, when workers building a coastal road cut into the ground and found them. Among the rubble they pulled out the colossal head of the giant himself, and slowly, piece by piece, the scene was put back together.

The cave gave up two more secrets: the first was an inscription, ten lines of Latin verse, praising the grotto and saying that only a new Virgil could do justice to its statues of Scylla and the blinding of the monster by the man from Ithaca. It told the archaeologists exactly what they had found. The second was carved into the base of the neighbouring ship: three names, Athenodoros, Agesander, and Polydorus, the same sculptors the Roman writer Pliny had named as the creators of the Laocoön, the statue I wrote about yesterday.

Homer's Odyssey is one of the oldest stories in the world, and it has outlived the emperor, the civilization that first told it, and every person who has ever loved it. Nearly three thousand years later, we are still telling the story of a man lost far from home, because some part of us always is...

It has been online since 2019. It takes no affiliate money. It runs no ads. Journalists cite it. Security researchers trust it.

Privacy Guides is a curated recommendation list. The site itself sells nothing.

It just tells you which private tool actually replaces every surveillance product in your life, tested by security researchers and updated every month, organized into 40+ categories with the exact reason each pick was chosen.

That's a shop window with a griddle in it. Not a diet.

Here's the real one. Go to the mince. Look at the prices and watch the whole racket fall over: the fattier it gets, the cheaper it gets, because the shop still thinks the fat is the fault. Twenty per cent costs less per kilo than five. Less than the chicken breast. The best food in the building is the one they've marked down for being too good.

Then take it home and try to ruin it. You can't. No resting. No probe. No thermometer, no reverse sear, no lad explaining the Maillard reaction to you like you've never met a hob. Pan. Twelve minutes. Six eggs in. Half a pack of butter on top. Fat stays in, because the fat is why it was cheap.

Eat it out of the pan standing up. Eat it cold at half eleven with a fork.

Nobody's selling you that, because there's nothing to sell.

Mark Perry, the source of this graph, is the best. There is a near-perfect, causal relationship between the degree of government intervention in a sector and it's change in affordability over time.

And while some will claim that "healthcare is special" because of the black swan costs of acute genetic disease, or information asymmetry or whatever... none of that applies to college tuition or textbooks.

Wherever massive state intervention goes, ignorance, waste, corruption and bureaucracy explodes. This the compounding, inescapable problem of public choice economics and the problem of socialist economic calculation (namely, that it can't) aka "the knowledge problem".

Loren Piretra (@lorenpiretra ) Just uncovered that two officers who were working for Utah Valley University Police at the time of the Charlie Kirk assassination — suddenly left the department and received significant promotions.

Officer Chris Bagley, who was one of the first officers on scene after the shooting, left UVU and joined the Spanish Fork Police Department as a senior officer. Reports show he was making under $45,000 at UVU after over 25 years in law enforcement — and then jumped to a position that reportedly pays between $90,000 and $150,000.
But he wasn’t the only one.

Officer Wyatt Goforth was also working as a UVU Police officer at the time of the assassination. He too left UVU shortly after and is now with the Spanish Fork Police Department, also receiving a major step up in rank and pay.

Both officers played roles in the initial response to one of the highest-profile political assassinations in recent American history — and both received substantial career advancements right afterward.

It’s fair to ask: Were these promotions earned through normal career progression, or is something else going on?

We’ve seen a lot of dogs in bad conditions but I think this lovely boy might be the worst pain I’ve ever seen a dog in. We’d been told about him by a kind man in the community who found him but had no idea how to help beyond giving him water, food and putting a little electric fan on him. He eventually got through to us in sheer desperation.

The dog has been there for days apparently and probably hit by some sort of major trauma. He hasn’t eaten or drank his water and he was laying in his own pee and poop. That little alley way was where it was all going to end very soon because I could see from his gums and other signs he was in big big trouble. We had to just go for it and make a stretcher with what we had and push through the pain. It took us 40 minutes to get back to Tina’s hospital and he screamed at every tiny bump on the road.

I thought his spine was broken and was super relieved when it wasn’t. I thought he might be so bad that we’d never be posting this video as it might be better to put him out of his misery.

He is very sick and has some stuff going on internally but it is pelvis related we believe. He is by no means 100% going to make it as he has so much going on inside him but we have some hope now. The team are in full action mode to try and save him.

I called him Bear as he is a big fluffy gentle giant I can tell. I’m not sure how this story ends but it’s already better than he was alone in that alley this morning. He’s having a huge sleep now with lots of pain relief and meds. 🤞🤞🤞

And if you have a low one, they're not ever gonna look at you. So yeah, now we have a social credit score for applications”

It’s a real class-action lawsuit filed in 2026 against Eightfold AI. They are a major AI-powered hiring platform used by companies like Microsoft, PayPal, Morgan Stanley, Starbucks, Chevron, Bayer and more

Secret scoring system works like this

Eightfold’s tools allegedly generate a “Match Score” or “likelihood of success” score from 0 to 5 for applicants

Low-scoring candidates are often automatically filtered out automatically before any human recruiter sees their application

The AI supposedly uses extensive data collections and aggregates far more than just your resume and over letter. This includes:

- Social media profiles (e.g., LinkedIn)
- Location and history data
- Internet activity including web searches
- Other third-party tracking data, the suit mentions vast datasets with 1.5+ billion data points

There is no transparency or recourse

Applicants allegedly aren’t notified, given a chance to review/correct the data, or informed of adverse actions

The plaintiffs argue violates the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and California’s Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act
