Profiling significant buildings from around the globe, this video filmed in New York by the Dezeen team explores the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation at the American Museum of Natural History (@amnh) in New York.
Designed by the Chicago-based architecture firm Studio Gang (@studiogang), the museum extension is designed to reference the caves and canyons of the American Southwest.
The building's organic cavernous forms were created with engineering firm Arup using a technique called shotcrete. This method for pouring concrete foundations sprays wet concrete over rebar cages to create custom non-repetitive forms. This building technique was also used during the construction of the city's subway system.
