The Tao as the primordial world-order

In ancient China the term Tao referred to a real spiritual current permeating the universe—the creative harmony that gives direction to all beings.

The Tao is the universal world-law, the flowing order in which heaven and earth move. To the old Chinese the Tao was not an abstraction; it was the living rhythm of the cosmos.

Greek thinkers later spoke of Logos or Cosmos: it is the objective wisdom of the world before human beings individualized it in their own thinking. This is the same law.

Humanity once lived inside the Tao

In the most ancient epochs,
people didn’t yet think in the modern,
self-aware way.
They felt the Tao streaming through them; their actions followed the world-rhythm instinctively, not by moral choice.

The Chinese sage said, ‘Man must follow the Tao.’ At that time this was literal: the Tao itself moved in the blood and breath of men.

Only later—when the human Ego began to awaken—did we lose this immediate participation and start to experience the Tao as something outside us, a teaching to be rediscovered.

The Tao and the Logos (Christ)

The Tao of the ancient East and the Logos of St John’s Gospel are the same spiritual Being, perceived from different cultural stages.

The Tao, of which Lao-tse spoke, is the same cosmic Word which, in later ages, was called the Logos. What the Chinese beheld in nature, the Christian beholds as living in the Christ.

•Lao-Tse revealed the world-order in nature.
•Christ revealed the world-order within the human ‘I’.

The Tao flows around man in the East; the Logos awakens inside man in the West.

Our task is to recreate the Tao out of free insight—to let the moral order flow again,
but now through self-aware love.

What once streamed through man as the Tao must now arise from within him as the Christ-impulse.
