@wanderingdave I live in part of Rose Park where they got smart and stopped putting in basements. But the downside is crawl-spaces are scary and whenever I get my furnace serviced I get charged a “hard to access fee” 😫
A pint of whiskey for a sick cow + a quart of brandy for an ailing mother were some of the reasons Spanish Fork citizens sought exceptions from the city-wide prohibition of alcohol in 1900! Learn more from Local Govt Specialist @SteedHeidi in this blog: https://t.co/6l4iJYurSR
If I’ve learned anything in recent days here on Salt Lake Twitter is that this will definitely improve the number of people to be considered on the “least sucky neighbors” matrix, but will not improve our overall desirable neighborhood *vibes* score.
@wanderingdave@slcmayor I’ve got a great public walkway behind my house on 1200 West. I’ve appreciated the efforts to add trees there. The existing trees were badly damaged during the 2020 windstorm. But every effort to plant new trees in their place has failed. I look forward to new efforts.
I bet you know of a community organization or non-profit with historic documents to preserve. If so, consider sharing information about this grant opportunity!
The Utah State Historical Records Advisory Board is awarding grants up to $7,500 to cultural heritage orgs, NPOs, and govt institutions who undertake time-limited archival projects. To date, USHRAB has awarded more than $400,000 in grant funding for UT based archival projects!
@bbart76 I actually think Ogden is an interesting case study in planning. Of all the “big” cities in Utah that I’ve visited theirs has the most distinct character. Even more ‘sense of place’ than SLC. It definitely has the most potential. They haven’t been overly developed yet.
#HappyValentinesDay, Utah! 💘 While flipping through the City and County Building lunch counter records from 1948, Local Government Records Specialist Heidi found a humorous version of the classic love poem! 😂 @SLCgov
Not gonna lie. The potholes in my neighborhood have been the last straw for me. I have already been feeling pretty down about where I live, not feeling the civic spirit. And these have just about broken me.
I suspect that it is mostly the mental bandwidth that is required to pay attention to issues. Westsiders are especially overwhelmed with an array of issues that require our advocacy. I imagine certain issues just don’t warrant the effort.
I wonder why residents on the west side aren't submitting mobile tickets as much ? Another factor, pushback from city bureaucracy. Go around to different parts of the city and it's pretty easy to see what's allowed in some places vs others.

#OTD 112 years ago a strike broke out at the Kenilworth Mine. Like many Carbon County towns, most Kenilworth residents were immigrants from Greece. In this blog post, @SteedHeidi tells a story of a Utah labor movement + two untimely deaths on Feb 6, 1911: https://t.co/SaRlqk3NzV
@wanderingdave I don’t think preservation is a non-issue. I’m not in that circle. But, i can see how wisely using existing structures, and preserving historical architecture gives a city texture, and when done responsibly and thoughtfully can enhance the walkability and enjoyment of a space.
This Washington football game has it all, fake punts, trick plays, turnovers, botched calls, missed point conversations, it has everything except defense.
Calling on all my public admin/city planning friends! I need your help spreading the word. My team is sponsoring an internship at the State Archives to help research the historical value of records created by City Planning and Zoning depts. There is potential for a $1000 stipend.
Applications are now open for our next round of interns! For the spring, we're offering 4 paid internships:
📇 Reference
🚦 Lester Wire Project
📣 Outreach and Advocacy
📊 Records Retention and Appraisal

Projects would involve meeting with municipal planning and zoning departments to discuss their work, and examine the resulting records, and working with our Archivists to determine if and how those records reflect the evolution of Utah’s communities.
