What my grandparents story taught me is that what we should remember on this Holocaust Memorial Day is not just the horrors of Auschwitz - the planned , mechanised & industrialised attempt to wipe out an entire people but also what led up to it. 

That was, quite simply, the willingness of ordinary people to ignore, go along with or, worst still, applaud the idea that all their problems were due to another group of people who deserved to lose their dignity, their freedom and, ultimately, their lives simply for being other.
