As we read, please tag @STEMBook_AU as you process the content and your own understanding of white supremacy and racism. Discussions will be ongoing throughout the month and we will have an official online discussion Monday June 29. #stemministbc
For the month of June we will be reading and working through Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad. This book is designed as a 28 day workbook to help those of us with white privilege explore and unpack white supremacy.
Please join us this month as we read, examine, learn, unlearn, and take ownership of the very structures that we benefit from. As a group we found it was important to have tough conversations about racism and continue to work to be anti-racist.
Hi y’all! We will be taking a brief hiatus during the month of May while @ArielStee3641 works on her comprehensive exams! We’ll see you all again in June!
Hey Y’all! Just a reminder our next book is “Living a Feminist Life” by Sara Ahmed and we’ll be meeting online April 19th at 12:00pm CST! Please DM me for the zoom link! #stemministbc
Q6: for those of you that read "Inferior" how do the conclusions made in this book support the conclusions and discussion made in "Inferior" and vice versa?
Q5: How much of an impact does gendered socialization play in how we interpret brain function, social function/activity, and the roles men/boys and women/girls play on society?
Q4b: Referring back to question 4, what are the consequences of those myths today and how can we challenge or change them? What evidence is there that disproves these theories?
Q4: How have the myths about the relationship between brain size and intelligence or brain complexity and ability perpetuated the myth that women are inferior or are only fit for domestic responsibilities and are not meant to be leaders been perpetuated throughout time?
@laura_j_parson So true! Often gender and sex gets conflated or overtly ignored in conversations about gendered constructs. You can't have one without the other, but if you also don't recognize how they're different and how they interact then its hard to have a productive conversation!
Q2: The book opens up with a discussion around sex and gender, gender/sex, sex/gender and what those terms mean and how they are used throughout the book. What is sex and what is gender? How are they different/similar? Why does society use sex and gender interchangeably?
Q3: How has science been used to marginalize women? How did brain scientists and psychologists use science to justify women's inferior status in society?
Q1: This month we read Gina Rippon's book "Gender and Our Brains." What parts of the book surprised you or were interesting to you? What things did you not know about before reading this book? #stemministbc
