Euphemia Lofton Haynes was an American mathematician born in 1890. She gained her PhD from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC in 1943. This made her the first black American woman, and the ninth black American person, to receive a PhD in mathematics 📚✏️

Julie Marie Vinter Hansen was a Danish astronomer born in 1890. She began working at the University of Copenhagen in 1915. She later worked at the University of California and was awarded the Annie J. Cannon Award in Astronomy 🔭📚

Roger Arliner Young was an American biologist born in 1889. She published in the journal Science in 1924, becoming the first black American woman to publish in this field. She became the first black American woman to gain a PhD in zoology in 1940 🐚🐠

Lucy Wilson was an American physicist born in 1888. She gained her PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1917. She specialised in optics and X-ray spectroscopy and was an instructor in physics at Mount Holyoke College, and a professor at Wellesley College 🔭✨

Inge Lehmann was a Danish seismologist born in 1888. She was the first to explain the arrival times of P waves, and in 1936, she discovered that the Earth has a solid inner core beneath its liquid outer core 🌍📚

Ruth Benedict was an American anthropologist and folklorist born in 1887. She gained her PhD at Columbia University in 1923. Here, she met Margaret Mead, with whom she shared a romantic relationship. Benedict was deaf having contracted measles as a child ✏️📚

Mary Poonen Lukose was an Indian doctor born in 1886. She graduated from University of Madras in 1909. She became the first woman appointed Surgeon General in India in 1938 and was awarded the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1975 🩺🏥

Ida Barney was an American astronomer born in 1866. She worked at Yale Observatory where she measured the positions of about 150,000 stars. These were published over 22 volumes from 1939 to 1983. She was succeeded by Ellen Dorrit Hoffleit 🔭✨

Lise Meitner was an Austrian-Swedish physicist and chemist born in 1878. Meitner and Otto Robert Frisch showed that Fritz Strassmann’s experiment was the first to provide evidence for nuclear fission and explained how the nucleus of an atom could be split into smaller parts ⚛️🔥

Louise Pearce was an American pathologist born in 1885. She helped develop treatment for African sleeping sickness and studied animal models of cancer. She was a member of Heterodoxy, a feminist club founded in 1912 with many LGBT+ members 🩺🦠

Chika Kuroda was a Japanese chemist born in 1884. She became the first Japanese woman to receive a Bachelor of Science in 1916, which she did at Tohoku Imperial University. She completed her PhD in 1929 and worked as a professor at Tokyo Women's Higher Normal School ⚗️🧅

Emmy Noether was a German mathematician born in 1882. She developed 'Noether's Theorem' while working at the University of Gottingen in 1915. She was dismissed from the University when Hitler came to power in 1933 and continued teaching for free from her own home 📚✏️

Alice Evelyn Wilson was a Canadian geologist born in 1881. She first worked for the Mineralogy Division of the University of Toronto Museum and became the first woman geologist hired by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1909 ⛏️��

Ethel Bellamy was a British astronomer and seismologist born in 1881. She worked for Radcliffe Observatory and for the Vatican Observatory, where she was not paid, and helped catalogue the position of over a million stars ✨🔭

Kono Yasui was a Japanese biologist born in 1880. She was the first woman to be published in the journal Zoological Science and was the first Japanese woman to receive a PhD science, which she achieved in 1927. She founded the cytology journal Cytologia in 1929 🔬🌸

Margarete Kahn was a German mathematician born in 1880. She specialised in the topology of algebraic curves, studying under David Hilbert and graduating in 1909, when women were not allowed to teach at universities. She was murdered by Nazis in 1942 📚✏️

Ellen Gleditsch was a Norwegian chemist born in 1879. She began her career as an assistant to Marie Skłodowska-Curie and became a pioneer of radiochemistry. She was the first person to successfully establish the half-life of radium, and helped prove the existence of isotopes 🧪💥
