Another snap from Stephane for the release of BLACK REASON FINALE
15th Sep
📸 - @StephaneJames
I just went to Cobham to get my kids some toys and went into a shop called @Farrants_Cobham
There is a MASSIVE picture that is pride of place at the point of payment. It is an image of black men, broken black men at a tobacco plantation with their overseers next to them?!?! I kid you not!
This is in a family store, this imagery is massive triggering and racist. And there is no conceivable reason it should be there! I’m so thankful I wasn’t with my girls.
How on earth could anyone have shopped there and found that image acceptable.
This is exhausting and damaging to many people.
I have nothing against AI, but I feel photographers need to be clear about what is and isn't AI. I have now included it in my bio for all to see.
Photography is about the experience. It is capturing a moment in time that will never be replicated. Much of what we photograph will not remain in the years to come. It is a historical record of events, people, and in my case, wildlife, and landscapes that will not remain the same with climate change and overpopulation.
I will do my best to share raw photos alongside edited ones so all edits are visible, with more behind-the-scenes images and videos, along with more detailed explanations about the photos I take. It will be crucial to share more about our experience with each photo we take and share, as AI is so close to making it unclear what is real and what isn't.
I have always used my photography to draw the viewer into realistic nature scenes so that one feels like they were there with me as I took the shot. This has been part of my mission of getting others to also care about conservation. There is so much that goes into capturing a single image. While AI is a fantastic tool and has been very fun to explore for me, it will never take the place of photography as art for me- the experience of camping in the mountains to get the sunrise shot or find the wildlife, the adventure to find the perfect view, the sounds, and smells of nature...the fact that it can take 25 trips to the same place to finally capture an image I am happy with. This cannot be replaced by AI. I hope that people continue to value real-life scenes and experiences as part of our humanity. That is all I will continue to focus on.
It will be very interesting to see what happens within the photography community as AI evolves and is already out in the newest version of Photoshop. I assume it will be similar to conversations around composite photography that have taken place in years past. I can see how useful it will be, and we already use it with Topaz sharpening and LR/PS to a small extent. What happens now as these tools can change all of a photo? It will definitely be interesting to watch.
