Deputies in Santa Rosa County, Florida, responded to a residence in Gulf Breeze after hours of escalating conflict between active-duty U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Bree Kuhn, 34, and her husband, 33-year-old Collin Turner, a medically discharged U.S. Marine veteran.

​Collin, a stay-at-home father preparing to start a master’s program in electrical engineering at Johns Hopkins University, had decided to take their two toddlers to stay with his parents in Georgia to de-escalate ongoing tensions.

The situation had spiraled the night before after an argument over late-night television, leading Kuhn to place Collin’s $2,500 laptop in the dishwasher and run a full cycle.

In an effort to keep him from leaving, Kuhn confiscated his identification, keys, and access to financial accounts, locking him out of the residence in the Florida heat.

​Deputies were dispatched to the home twice earlier that afternoon:

Around 1:00 PM, Kuhn called claiming an altercation, but responding officers observed zero injuries, redness, or physical evidence of an assault.

Around 5:00 PM, Collin called after being locked out in the driveway for hours. Deputies instructed Kuhn that Collin co-owned the property and could not be locked out, warning both parties that any further escalation would lead to an arrest.

​Shortly after law enforcement cleared the scene, Kuhn locked Collin inside the garage. At 6:22 PM, Collin contacted dispatch for a third time.

​While calmly describing the situation to the dispatcher, the garage door opened. On the recorded call, a sudden sh0t is heard, followed by Collin’s final words: “She just sh0t me!” Kuhn then fired three additional rounds, all striking Collin in the back.
​When deputies returned five minutes later, Collin was found unresponsive on the garage floor, and the firearm was discovered hidden behind a kitchen toaster.

​During interrogation, Kuhn claimed she fired out of fear for her life. However, investigators presented the recorded 911 audio and forensic evidence showing all rounds entered from behind, directly contradicting her account. She was charged first degree murder and held without bail until trial.

​The case went to trial, a Florida jury rejected her defense and convicted Bree Kuhn of second-degree murder, resulting in a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
