If @mcps and @mocoboe refuse to provide a virtual school for the hundreds of kids that need it, then they need to use funds allocated to those students (for their education) to send them to virtual schools in other counties.
Don’t balance budget on our children’s backs.
Happy Budget Day @MCPS !
A year ago, MVA gave every MoCo kid access to a public school - regardless of health or circumstance.
Now kids are pushed back into the opportunity gap as we ⬆️ 💰 to school everyone else.
Unconscionable.
@ThomasTaylorEdD@willjawando@mocoboe
Smaller counties w/ smaller budgets have managed to maintain a virtual school.
State fiscal analysis says per-pupil revenues fund a virtual school. It’s not “extra.”
Educating ALL students is a mandate that is funded but not fulfilled in @MCPS.
@ThomasTaylorEdD@mocoboe
Virtual students/staff need the structure, support, & stability of a school that is non-negotiable. Same as in-person kids need their brick schools.
MVA enrollment was more than 68% of schools in MCPS & performance > or = @MCPS & comps.
@ThomasTaylorEdD@mocoboe
Too many MoCo kids couldn’t receive a full education before MVA - & have not since - b/c they can’t attend in-person for health, safety, or circumstantial reasons.
They deserve equal educational opportunities.
Only a virtual school can do that. @ThomasTaylorEdD@mocoboe
Heads up @MCPS.
Reminder: having a virtual school does not mean curriculum has to be digital. My MVA kiddo read real books & did his math w/ pen & paper, while interacting with teachers/peers virtually.
We need a virtual school AND textbooks.
MVA did that & changed lives.
A virtual school is a win win for students and the @MCPS system. Kids who need the virtual access can finally be a part of a full learning community and kids can access specialized classes not offered at their home school. @ThomasTaylorEdD please make MCPS work for ALL students.
Do ALL MoCo kids matter? TBD
A virtual school was offered to those who WANTED it during a pandemic - but not to those who’ve NEEDED basic access before/after.
MVA offered access AND enrichment. A virtual school serves the whole county.
@ThomasTaylorEdD@mocoboe@willjawando
Every child deserves a school and learning community that they can thrive in. Without a virtual school in the @MCPS FY26 budget hundreds of students will be denied that community. @ThomasTaylorEdD please give these kids the fundamental access they need.

@ThomasTaylorEdD@mocoboe
Former MVA students are still struggling and will continue to do so without a full virtual school in the FY26 @MCPS budget. If the zero-based review is meant to focus on fundamentals, virtual school is the ONLY basic access hundreds of students would have. @ThomasTaylorEdD
@cmarsh3409@PCMC1@mocoboe@MCPS@KarlaSilves_BOE I think it was a mix of misinformed judgements about virtual school and lack of due diligence in spite of contrary evidence. And now hundreds of children have been forced out of the system because their one option for access was removed.
This is absolutely why you have to listen to the key stakeholders, families, in these types of decisions. We told @mocoboe and @MCPS that it would be more costly to close MVA. This data proves it. “Save” 5M but lose at least 5.8M in revenue.
MVA saved money and gave access.
Happy Enrollment Count Day to all who celebrate! 🎉
Absent from the count are 295 students who applied for MVA this year, but have now left MCPS.
That's > $5.8m in revenue lost - more than Dr. Felder's budget said would be saved.
@mocoboe@ThomasTaylorEdD@MoCoCouncilMD
@mocoboe Eliminating the MVA left hundreds of students without even just basic access to an education. Priority needs to be ensuring basic access for all before doing the extra programs. @ThomasTaylorEdD please ensure basic access first.
Friendly reminder that MVA's elementary attendance > MCPS' elementary average. There are several MVA kids who have yet receive instruction this year b/c MCPCs doesn't have a plan for chronic illness. 5 days and counting...
