🗣️ Javier Tebas says Gianni Infantino "must not continue" as FIFA President. "That FIFA has withdrawn its proposal to privatize its competitions is good news. But it would be a grave mistake to think that this has resolved the governance problem.

"The confederations, associations, leagues, players... should not settle for this withdrawal and consider the matter closed. The issue is much deeper.

"Have we already forgotten the withdrawal of the red card after a political intervention? The investigation opened in the United States Congress, which has requested the appearance of Gianni Infantino for extremely serious conduct? The withdrawal of charges in historic cases of FIFA corruption? The scandalous prices of World Cup tickets? The unilateral decisions on the international calendar, new competitions, and formats, adopted without a true process of dialogue and agreement with the involved parties?

"The problem was never a single proposal. The problem is a governance model that concentrates power, reduces checks and balances, and sidelines those directly affected by its decisions.

"For all these reasons, I believe Gianni Infantino must not continue at the helm of FIFA.

"World football needs new leadership that modernises its governance, recovers institutional credibility, and builds future decisions by agreeing them with the involved actors, previously evaluating their sporting, economic, and social impact, rather than imposing them unilaterally. Withdrawing a proposal does not erase everything that has happened. It is only the tip of the iceberg."

How will we jail politicians who decamped and joined you though? We all know in a fair and proper justice system they would end up as jail birds. Will we look the other way and jail only the ones who did not support us? Or like in 2002 decide to bury the hatchet and pretend we’ve began a new chapter with the same characters in power?

On providing alternatives. If we first reject recycled and corrupt politicians now, our collective power as voters will elevate leaders who meet the standards we demand, even if they seem “unpopular” today. Politicians respond to incentives. As long as we keep rewarding corruption with votes, the system has no reason to change. We cannot spend every day lamenting corruption while electing leaders who openly profess they will leave Kenya just as corrupt as they found it.
