June 29 1982 - One day after trading point guard Kelvin Ransey, the Blazers found their next point guard, selecting Lafayette "Fat" Lever of Arizona State with the 11th selection in the 1982 NBA Draft.

"A marvelous defender with fine leadership qualities," said Blazers GM Stu Inman. "I think he will develop into a better guard than Ransey," said Portland coach Jack Ramsay.

Lever averaged 16.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists as a senior for the Sun Devils. In four years in Tempe, Lever averaged 10.1 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists, and set a Pac-10 Conference career record with 444 assists.
