I have a title.
For months I have been working on a project that began thirty-eight years ago — a senior history thesis I wrote in 1988 about a revival that tore through my Conservative Mennonite community. I have been revising and publishing it chapter by chapter on Substack, letting the memoirist finally say what the historian couldn't.
In the process, I have discovered what the book is actually about.
It is not about the revival.
It is about what happens to a body inside a system that uses love as a mechanism of control. It is about a ten-year-old boy in the southern wing of a school building, forty yards away from something extraordinary, absorbing more than he knows. It is about the historian who documented the violence carefully, footnoted it accurately, and missed everything else.
The book is called What the Body Knew.
I wrote this paper in 1988. I got the facts right. I missed everything else.
