To those saying that we don’t “pay in” to a state pension, and that it is a benefit, why is there an online government State Pension forecast based on…what you’ve paid in?
On top of which, if you haven’t paid in enough, you can top it up before retirement to increase what you receive in your state pension.
Payments in = Pension. Fact.
The gaslighting by the Left is getting tedious now.

New job, but still churning out the same old stock answers on VAT on school fees, @bphillipsonMP.
Please. Do us a favour.
We have rebutted these lines time and again. They simply don't stand up to scrutiny.
“Who can afford it?” Fewer families — because your Government deliberately made it more expensive.
“More schools have opened than closed?” Only if you blur mainstream independent schools with the very different picture in specialist provision.
“It’s funding state schools?” Teacher numbers are falling. Publish the VAT actually collected — and set against it the second-order impacts and additional state-sector costs created by the policy.
And then comes the claim that she believes in parental choice.
Some choice. She deliberately made one option more expensive, knowing that families would be priced out of it.
We've rebutted these claims properly, with the evidence here:

And another one...
301 families put Northampton's most in-demand state secondary school as their first choice.
Just 98 of them got a place.
Sure, this school has always been popular. But it rather reinforces the point: there was already huge pressure on the most sought-after state schools before the Govt decided to push more families out of independent education.
The Education Secretary uses national first-choice figures as evidence that VAT hasn't put pressure on the state sector.
But education isn't national. It's local.
And locally, the story can look very different.

In July 2024, it was promised that introducing Europe’s only Education Tax would fund 6,500 extra teachers.
Instead, there are currently 2,300 fewer state-school teachers & PE teachers are being made redundant.
Thank you @DavidAltonHL for again highlighting the harms that the Government's education tax has caused.
Parents have long warned that this tax would force children out of their schools, increasing strain on state schools.
The @EducationNotTax team are also documenting the harms of this tax and our analysis of *Government* data also shows that reality is far greater than projected figures. This analysis can be found below. It's time to repeal this tax (and, contrary to Govt claims, this is NOT the norm).

Lord Alton (cont): "Lord Lexden was right to ask the House to consider all this again, and to reiterate the need to value all schools, state or independent, and I hope we will have a review of this policy that he rightly called for."
These are results we should be hugely proud of. They are down to the work of brilliant teachers & hard won evidence-led reforms.
English pupils among the top ten performing groups of students in the world for reading, maths & science. We are punching well above our weight.
Meanwhile in Scotland & Wales where the same reforms were not enacted, pupils have fallen back in the international rankings, recording their worst results in maths and reading.
Lucy Powell seems intent on leading a campaign of national sabotage against our education system. It is bonkers to undo reforms that have raised standards and helped children. Focussing on academic outcomes increases opportunity.
@LucyMPowell By taxing 131 good ones out of existence & forcing 43,000 children to move from schools they love? Whilst taxing autism & dyslexia? Whist making 1000s of teachers unemployed & lying about teacher numbers? #EducationNotTax
Britain has a teacher recruitment problem.
Labour promised 6,500 more teachers.
They taxed our children's education on the promise it would fund those teachers and improve state schools.
Spoiler alert, it hasn't. The number of teachers in state schools has actually FALLEN since their chosen baseline.
At the same time, their education tax has pushed more children towards the state sector.
More pupils. Fewer teachers.
How exactly was that supposed to help?
The great teacher shortage is turning into a crisis

The mental gymnastics from @Miatsf claiming she is “pro choice” about private schools, but also happily snatching choice from families not as wealthy as her & her hedge fund manager husband.
Never a subsidy but now the taxpayer funds tens of thousands of more children in state.
Here we go again. Another @UKLabour Minister who thinks a VAT exemption is a subsidy. 😡
The Government does NOT subsidise parents who send their children to private school.
Parents pay the fees themselves.
They also pay taxes towards state education.
Not taxing education isn't a subsidy.
What's “bizarre”, @Miatsf, is that you, a Government Minister, are pretending that it is.
