🚨🛢️DIESEL EXPORT EMBARGO pushed by the senior Senate Republican. Grassley's Iowa is a top battleground state in the fight for the Senate, w/Ashley Hinson up against Josh Turek. Earlier this week, John Thune told me he was open to exploring a diesel export ban to cut prices.
W diesel $6.57 in Iowa why doesn’t Pres Trump put an embargo on diesel exports like presidents in the 70s put embargoes on ag products bc food prices were inflated. High diesel prices ARE KILLING FARMERS INCOME #cornwatch#soybeanwatch
New: I got my hands on an advance copy of Thom Tillis' new book (coming out tomorrow). Interesting details on how the WH leaned on him to vote "yes" on Hegseth, including a Situation Room briefing with Vance.
Tillis was noncommittal, but cast the deciding vote after he couldn't find a "smoking gun that would pry more votes away from him."
Calls Hegseth's confirmation the "biggest regret of my career."
Similar comment about his support for RFK, telling GOP colleagues at the time that he'd vote no if they "came out and gave me a reason to do so."
He didn't want to be the "lone voice in the wilderness."
"I should’ve stopped Kennedy," Tillis says. "I know that now." https://t.co/NaeyzOiuRQ
My last interaction with Hastert was when he was working as a lobbyist prowling the Senate hallways. He was a pretty shocking sight - I remember he had gained weight, seemed sweaty, and refused to tell me what he was working on. I had no idea he was hustling because he needed hush money.
Tillis also plays a game on the Senate basement train where he challenges staff and visitors to stand on one leg and not touch the walls for balance as it goes along. At least since 2017 but likely before then too, he’s been doing Senate subway hijinks
Susan Collins spoke at greater length today (thanks to the persistence of @StevenTDennis & a broken train) about why she's confident that Kavanaugh won't vote to overturn Roe.
"In a record-setting commercial truck deal, international shipping giant FedEx has placed an order for 2,000 all-electric box trucks from American startup Harbinger in a deal that’s reportedly worth more than $300 million" — an investment FedEx expects will save them $800 million in avoided diesel costs ($20k per truck per year!)

Given how big Texas is (20+ markets) I wouldn’t be surprised if this is actually the cheaper option. Pretty sure groups were buying national ads for Texas/Ohio State two weeks ago.
Coffee-flation: This is now "on sale" for $15.99 less than two years later. List price is now ~$21.99. Still a lot cheaper at ~8 cents a cup relative to Starbucks.
Frugal Reporter Pro-Tip: Taster’s Choice is on sale at Costco for ~$11.49. Makes up to 210 cups. Will literally save you *hundreds of dollars* relative to Starbucks. No filters or fancy presses needed. Save thousands of dollars over decades. Invest wisely.
There are a bunch of specific things I like about our permitting bill, beyond the big important stuff — that it will lower electric costs and emissions, and lift wind, solar and battery power (BIG lift for battery), and add LOTS of good jobs.🧵
In 2019, Trump was forced to cancel plans to hold the G7 at his own golf club amid GOP objections to self dealing. In 2026, he will hold the G20 at his own golf club and the critics have gone silent. How Trump has moved the ethical line in his second term. https://t.co/OVU9xhF3jA
Axios' @mikeallen asks Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent if he regrets saying "I am the house now."
Bessent: "No, because look, the house doesn't win every hand. The house plays percentages."
I’m still surprised how little US spends on politics relative to the many-trillion stakes. It would be legal for a corporation to spend a billion on a pivotal race that could net much more than that in tax and regulatory breaks. Diesel export ban nixed by Trump alone could have cost refiners billions. “Big money” moves in states like Kansas are 8-figures but the impact could be 13 figures.
“Efficient markets” theory doesn’t seem to have caught up with political spending.
