The Lambton Worm is an old folk legend from North East England, specifically Sunderland and County Durham.

Story in short:
•John Lambton, heir to the Lambton estate, skips church one Sunday to go fishing in the River Wear.
•He catches a strange, eel-like creature (the “worm”) with nine holes along its sides.
•Horrified, he throws it down a well instead of killing it.
•While he goes off to fight in the Crusades, the creature grows into a massive dragon-like beast that terrorises the countryside, wrapping itself around Penshaw Hill and eating livestock.
•When John returns years later, he seeks advice from a local wise woman, who tells him he must fight the worm in a spiked suit of armour in the river, and—critically—must also kill the first living thing he sees after the battle.
•He kills the worm in the river, its body chopped to pieces that float away, but when he calls for his father to release a dog for the sacrifice, the old man rushes to him first. Unable to kill his father, the curse remains, and nine generations of Lambtons are doomed to die without heirs.

The tale has been passed down through song, story, and ballads (sometimes in broad North East dialect), and it’s become one of the region’s best-known pieces of folklore—there’s even a statue of the Worm in Sunderland.
