The first six AUG prototypes all had a removable optic option. It wasn’t until the 7th, and final, prototype that the decision was made to do the integrated optic. After that every StG 77 (the Austrian Military designation for the AUG) came with a Swarovski 1.5× optical sight.

A common misconception is that the HBAR and the AUG LMG are the same weapon configuration. But the AUG LMG was an open-bolt platform with its own unique trigger pack and bolt carrier that was actually requested by and designed for the British.

The development of the AUG was done in very close coordination with the Austrian military, and was required to meet all of their demands. However, when the rifle was complete, Austria was not the first to place an order. The first 10,000 AUG order was placed by Tunisia in 1977.
