After going through comments in this post, I have come to a conclusion that we are always trying to have the GOAT debate with people who were in diapers when CR7 would tear through teams and made them look average

I mean the 2004 version that would make an invincible side of Arsenal (the best Arsenal squad I have watched in my lifetime) look average.

The winger who would dribble past defenders in a premier league side that had the most deadly defenders and tackles and would win any game irrespective of how difficult it was.

The winger who outshined some of the best generations of talents, I mean talk about Scholes, Lampard, Ribery, Roben, Giggs, Henry, Beckham, Drogba, Gerald. Etc winning Ballon d’ors amidst these talents.

The version who was responsible for all free kicks (some of the best that you will find in records in @premierleague and @LaLiga

The version who broke the record transfer fee in 2009 (When I graduated from high school) to move to Real Madrid and conquered Laliga which had the best version of Barcelona squad you can ever put together (Xavi, Messi, Iniesta, Ronaldinho, Eto’o, Puyol, etc) winning more Ballon d’or amidst world talents such Wesley Sneijder, Raul, Kaka, Figo, Zizu, Messi, and the list goes on. With some of the insane games of El Clásico we’ve enjoyed over the years.

The version named Mr @ChampionsLeague for obvious reasons.

The one who won everything there is to win at @ManUtd before heading to Laliga and winning it all and then to Italy and doing the same.

The one who became part of @selecaoportugal without a single international trophy and will retire with at least 3 of them. Compared to other countries that had countless international trophies before the players that are put in the same conversation with CR7 became part of the team.

So before you actually have this debate with anyone, be sure to ask them which version of @Cristiano they have watched, the prolific goal scorer (No 9) after turning 30? The 41 year old box player in a conversation with 20+ year old who were not yet even born when he was conquering leagues? Or the real version we have watched morphed over the years.

5 Years Anniversary… ❤️ 👩‍❤️‍👨

About 13 years ago, during a Maths & Statistics class, I saw a beautiful, innocent and loud girl making a little bit of noise. I walked up to her, asked her to keep it down a little, guess what she did? She just eyed me, look up and down eyeing o😂

From that day, I became a regular around her hostel gate and almost everywhere on campus. I kept telling her just two things: “I like you and I’d love to call you mine.” And of course, “If you agree, you won’t regret it because I have bright future o… moni future.” 🤣 Hard guy don fall in love.

After months of plenty shakara, she finally said YES under a tree at the school car park. That was one of the happiest days of my life.

Seven years of dating later, filled with love, laughter, growth, prayers, lessons and even tough moments, we stood before Allah, our families, loved one and h8ters 😄 and became husband and wife.

Today marks 5 years of marriage, and Allah has been incredibly faithful. Beyond giving me an amazing wife, He blessed us with two handsome boys who have brought so much joy, laughter, purpose and plenty noise into our home. Watching you become such an incredible mother has made me love and admire you even more.

Alhamdulillah for patience, understanding, good health, grace and even the “little change” because e no easy o.

Happy 5th wedding anniversary to us, my love. Thank you for choosing us every day and for making our house a home. Here’s to many more beautiful years together, In shaa Allah.

Durante años nos vendieron un relato: que Messi era un Dios del futbol. Que todo lo que ganó con el Barça, sus Balones de Oro y sus títulos con Argentina eran consecuencia exclusiva de su supuesto talento divino. Construyeron la imagen del futbolista perfecto: noble, humilde, intocable y merecedor de absolutamente todo.

Pero ese relato empezó a desmoronarse con el caso Negreira. Durante más de una década, el Barcelona realizó pagos por supuestas asesorías arbitrales a quien era vicepresidente del Comité Técnico de Árbitros. Esa sombra inevitablemente alcanza los títulos de aquella etapa y también una parte de los números que inflaron el mito de Messi.

Después llegaron los Balones de Oro, donde los criterios cambiaban según conviniera para premiarlo.

En 2010 se impusieron las estadísticas individuales por encima de los títulos y de las extraordinarias temporadas de Xavi, Iniesta y Sneijder.

Y ni siquiera puede ignorarse que su primer Balón de Oro, en 2009, llega después del escandaloso arbitraje de Stamford Bridge, una de las mayores polémicas de la historia reciente del futbol.

Los Balones de Oro de 2011, 2012 y 2015, para mí, fueron merecidos.

Pero en 2019 volvió la polémica. Messi terminó llevándose el premio prácticamente por ser el máximo goleador de LaLiga, mientras Virgil van Dijk completó una temporada extraordinaria con el Liverpool, conquistando Europa y siendo el mejor defensor del mundo.

En 2021, el Balón de Oro debió ser para Robert Lewandowski, que venía de romper todos los registros con el Bayern. El gran argumento para premiar a Messi fue la Copa América.

Y en 2023 la contradicción fue todavía mayor. El Mundial pasó a ser el criterio absoluto para entregarle otro Balón de Oro, mientras Erling Haaland firmó una temporada histórica ganándolo prácticamente todo con el Manchester City y Kylian Mbappé también tuvo números extraordinarios. Curiosamente, lo que en 2010 no importó —los títulos colectivos— ahora sí era determinante. Los criterios cambiaban según el ganador.

Con Argentina también hubo un antes y un después.

Antes de 2021, una enorme parte de la propia afición argentina señalaba a Messi como un “pecho frío”, incapaz de aparecer en los momentos decisivos. Luego vinieron su renuncia a la selección, sus acusaciones contra la CONMEBOL por supuestos favoritismos hacia Brasil y, llamativamente, comenzaron a aparecer decisiones arbitrales que constantemente terminaban beneficiándolo.

También resulta difícil ignorar que la Copa América pasó de disputarse cada cuatro años a celebrarse cinco veces en apenas una década, hasta que finalmente Messi pudo levantar el trofeo.

En 2022, Louis van Gaal dejó una frase que dio la vuelta al mundo: que querían hacer campeón a Messi y que algún día la verdad saldría a la luz.

Y, guste o no, ese proceso ya comenzó.

Cada vez son más las personas, incluso fuera del futbol, que dejan de ver a Messi como un héroe intocable y empiezan a verlo como un futbolista al que el sistema protegió y benefició hasta niveles difíciles de justificar. Como un producto construido alrededor de intereses deportivos, políticos y comerciales. Como la gran figura que la FIFA decidió convertir en leyenda.

Y eso, inevitablemente, termina manchando su legado.

Por eso yo nunca compraré el relato del “GOAT”.

Durante toda mi vida voy a combatir esa narrativa. Para mí, Messi fue un genio con el balón, nadie puede negar su talento. Pero también fue un futbolista cuyo legado quedó marcado por Negreira, por decisiones arbitrales polémicas, por criterios cambiantes en los premios individuales y por un sistema que, demasiadas veces, jugó a su favor.

En mi historia no será el mejor futbolista de todos los tiempos.

Será recordado como el Falso Mesías: un genio, sí, pero también una figura cuyo mito, en opinión de millones, fue construido, beneficiado y protegido por el sistema.
