In 1292, Nicholas IV, the first Franciscan Pope, commissioned statues from the Italian artist Arnolfo di Cambio to represent the Nativity Scene in the Roman Papal Basilica of St Mary Major.

The nativity scene is located in the basilica's Sistine Chapel.
