God does still perform miracles today, but miracle is such an overused word that it has practically lost its meaning and significance.

A miracle is defined as a surprising but welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of divine agency.

The following little chart will give you an idea what a miracle is and what a miracle is not. The numbers in each list correspond to each other.

Miracle:
1. Red Sea parting; sun standing still; global flood
2. Congenital blindness instantly healed; person congenitally lame instantly runs
3. Resurrection from the dead
4. Coin in a fish' mouth (Matt. 17:24-27)
5. Regeneration (spiritual miracle)

Not a miracle:
1. It stops raining just in time for the picnic
2. Gradual recovery from illness
3. Resuscitation (ex: someone falls through the ice)
4. Getting a letter from Ed McMahon at Publishers Clearing House (unlikely, but not a miracle)
5. Behavior modification

Miracle is an overused word. If everything is miraculous, nothing is. Please hear me: God does still perform miracles when it pleases Him to do so, but most of the things we call miracles today are not really miracles. When someone gradually recovers from an illness, that is a kind providence of God, but it is not a miracle. To overuse this word cheapens the truly miraculous.
