HMS Aurora on the sands at Millom, Cumberland, UK before being broken up, Sept 1990.
HMS Aurora was a Leander-class frigate of the Royal Navy (RN). Like other ships of the class, Aurora was named after a figure of mythology, Aurora being the Roman equivalent of the Greek goddess Eos.
In 1987, due to defence cuts, as well as manpower shortages, a common problem for the RN at that time, Aurora was decommissioned and sent for scrap 3 years later. Arrived for scrapping 6 September 1990 at Millom, Cumbria.
Midnight in the arctic, with the flagship, HMS Duke Of York steaming at 28 knots off the Norwegian coast while covering HM aircraft carriers, July 1944.
