The new biopic on #MichaelJackson , from director Antoine Fuqua, is only interested in showing us the myth of Michael Jackson and not truly exploring the man behind it.
#MichaelMovie serves as a vehicle for Jaafar Jackson to show us how well he can personify Michael (which he is incredible at doing), for Colman Domingo to deliciously chew up the scenery playing MJ’s abusive and villainous father and to remind us thru concert scenes and recordings (which are well done here) of what an iconic performer and artist Jackson was.
BUT the film fails at delivering any real depth to Michael. He wasn’t just this victim of child abuse with a high pitched voice trying to heal the world 24/7. He reportedly dated Tatum O’Neal, Brooke Shields and other women during those years that inspired some of his songs, had a deeper voice behind the scenes that he used when he wasn’t trying to play it safe with the white audience, dealt with jealousy from his brothers (especially Jermaine), was exposed to sexual activities after performing in strip clubs at the age of 9, had an interesting relationship with Diana Ross that led to him being cast in The Wiz, had a fierce rivalry with Prince (which only gets a passing reference), had the press and the public mocking his “weird” love of animals, his nose job and the “whitening” of his skin, his maternal relationship with Liz Taylor, the USA for Africa song that he was very instrumental in bringing about and, yes, he started having sleepovers with children during the years that are covered in the movie. NONE of that is explored or discussed or covered with any real depth much to the movie’s detriment.
The film, instead, chooses to focus on selective big moments in MJ’s career to build up his legend as he tries to find his voice and stand up to his father. If that’s all you want from it then you’ll like this movie…which will probably make hundreds of millions of dollars. But Michael’s incredible, iconic and complicated legacy cried out for a much better movie profiling his rise to fame, the pitfalls of it, and how he navigated it all to make the iconic music he made. MICHAEL is what you get when family members are allowed to be the EPs of biopics. 2.5/5 stars
With profound sadness, we honor the life and legacy of #KikiShepard. She was a cherished member of The Apollo family and the incomparable voice and presence that helped define our stage for a generation. For more than 15 years.
Michelle and I were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of a true giant, the Reverend Jesse Jackson. We will always be grateful for Jesse's lifetime of service, and the friendship our families share. We stood on his shoulders. We send our deepest condolences to the Jackson family and everyone in Chicago and beyond who knew and loved him.
@papiwontmiss For me, it was my 2 aunts taking me shopping and I had to model it for my mom and dad. My mom would start an argument with my aunts for letting me pick the outfits, but my dad would say “I love it”.

“We had to destroy the myth because Mike Myers f*cked us.”
“I am a huge fan, so don’t get me wrong, but he made it impossible to do the gags."
