Allow me to introduce you to CERF – the all-European recommended directive on cognitive simplification of the population. A directive that turns language from a tool for understanding the world into a tool for ordering pizza and writing complaints, and forces humanity to degrade at the most basic cognitive level.

These guys achieved what Orwell didn’t even dare dream of in 1984. No wonder European IQ has simply started declining.But let’s go step by step.

I love learning languages, and when Duolingo appeared, I was thrilled. I started learning German and after a while noticed something strange.They taught me dozens of words for different types of supermarkets, shops, and pharmacies. One of the first important words was bioladen – an organic products store. But they didn’t give me a single word for inference, reflection, concept, understanding, equation, or calculation – nothing like that.

Among the words the creators of Duolingo considered necessary for beginners were “roller skates,” “surfboard,” “dough board,” “phone battery,” and so on. But all words denoting higher nervous activity or complex emotional experiences were simply absent. Instead, there were words like “volunteers,” “mosque,” and “environmental care.”

Not a single excerpt from great German literature. These were replaced by absurd dialogues of people with the intelligence of a paramecium who volunteer, go to the mosque, and care about the environment. Their names were Ali and Vikram – pure-blooded Germans. They mostly got married man to man. I genuinely felt like I was getting stupider. This course was teaching me not to think. Worse – at the most basic, foundational level, it instilled that language is not for thinking. It’s for ordering roller-skates.

At first I thought this was some specific German Duolingo cringe, especially since I didn’t see anything like it in Hebrew or Chinese. (For example, in Chinese one of the first words you learn is book, school, teacher, doctor, bookstore, bookshelf.)

But then I took exams in another European language and found exactly the same thing. For instance, the exam required writing a complaint letter. You had to complain about something. Or write a letter about wanting to do volunteer work. Or about the horrors of global warming.

Language is a tool for understanding the world. But there were no questions about history, science, or literature. No demand for any deep thoughts.T he exam requirements literally turned a person into an intellectual nonentity who constantly complains that everyone owes him something.

Sample letters demanded that the city hall “establish environmental protection courses,” do this, do that – in short, do everything. Sample letters required complaining about everything: a restaurant that didn’t feed you well enough, a hotel that didn’t accommodate you properly, and demanding, demanding – money. Free stuff. Compensation for moral damages because our poor victim didn’t eat well or didn’t get what they expected.

In all these “essay topics” there was no trace that humanity does anything besides roller-skating, entering same-sex marriages, and suffering from a wrongly assigned hotel room.Not a single reference to history, science, or using language as a tool to understand the world. Language exists to complain that you were poorly served at a hotel.

So. This is not just random degradation. This is an all-European directive – the so-called CEFR.Once again: the Council of Europe adopted a set of rules for learning foreign languages. Formally, these are just common standards that should “bring language closer to real life” and create levels A1, A2, B1, etc., which are used for exams across the EU.

In reality, under the guise of “bringing language closer to real life,” there is a quiet and deliberate destruction of the essence of language as a tool for understanding the world and creating culture. Instead, language is turned into “let me ride roller skates” and “let me write a complaint about my new phone.”

This is beyond Orwell. Remember how Orwell said the Party remade the language? Here, language as a tool for understanding the world is not just remade – its function of creating a treasury of knowledge is being destroyed.

You may think this happens only at the beginner levels. Not at all. The real horror begins at C1–C2. Don’t make a mistake – this is a truly high, even super-high level. There you master high bureaucratese and learn words that not every native speaker knows.

C2 is a level almost no one reaches.

But even at this super-high level, they ask you nothing about history, literature, mythology, or the culture of the country. According to CEFR, the history and literature of Europe simply do not exist. But volunteer work, global warming, and multiculturalism do. Write a letter to your rich neighbor saying you have a homeless shelter and need money from her.

As I said, all this is done under the pretext that “language learning should be brought closer to life.” In reality, there is no “bringing closer to life” here. No normal person will write a 200-word complaint to a hotel or restaurant about bad service. No one will write a formal letter to a university asking for “information on required admission documents” – they’ll just go to the website.

What is here is ideology. An ideology that assumes a person must be turned into an idiot who believes everyone owes him something. To do this, language must be destroyed at the fundamental level – turned from a means of building a treasury of knowledge into a means of asking for roller skates.

Language is only part of the metalanguage used by culture. This metalanguage includes situations, proverbs, characters, science, literature, key historical events, and the very habit of thinking. Plutarch describes how in Sparta boys at the common table were required to talk about elevated topics.

So, all of this is quietly thrown out – at the subconscious, pre-linguistic level. From thwe CERF point of view, language is not a way to understand and describe the world. It is a way to ask for roller skates and complain that you were poorly served in a restaurant.

And don’t think this is a trifle. This affects millions of children learning English at school. They learn it exactly this way. Just as in the USSR English lessons required talking about “the congress of the Communist Party of Great Britain,” now these new lessons require writing complaints about a phone with a scratched screen.

This is also helped by Europe’s beloved multiculturalism. Europe has several major languages in which Flaubert, Goethe, Dostoevsky, and Cervantes wrote. But there are also many small languages that simply never went through the corresponding period of development. To equalize everything, the big languages must have their depth and culture taken away. Roller skates can indeed be discussed in any language.

And if you bring a bunch of migrants to Europe, teach them “roller skates” and “volunteer work” instead of the language of Schiller and Goethe – you will get a population with low IQ, fundamentally degraded at the linguistic level. You will get people raised like Mowgli – only not among wolves, but among “roller skates” and bioladen.

And there will be a bigsurprise in the end, because the cognitively simplified population will not go into “volunteering.” It will go to the mosque.
