Contrary to popular belief, many stories are based in a particular cultural (and therefore racial) background, and you can't always swap races without damaging the credibility of the work.

It's a bare minimum requirement that stories about a certain culture or time period or region have characters that actually look like they're from that culture/time/region.

This idea of a universalized culture that anyone can be a part of doesn't exist. To be a part of a particular group, you need to fulfill certain requirements, and sometimes you will lack qualifications that you just can't control. You have to accept that some things are not accessible to you. You are a limited being with limited options. We all are.
