Read this thread about our work to get Pittsburgh schools @PPSnews to stop allowing its police to ticket students for minor infractions. Black students suffer the most. Wrong use of police. Read this thread and our letter https://t.co/C0h1EAqfPW @aclupa @ACLU

This week the @PPSnews board can advance its students’ education and disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline by stopping the practice of issuing summary citations to students for minor misbehavior. Will the board do the right thing? A 🧵1/

In New Mexico, Native students are expelled far more often than any other group, at least four times as often as white students. Wearing the wrong color shirt can get you written up for “gang-related activity.” Banging on a window is bullying.@propublica

This is an important investigation of how Black and Latinx students are punished by being suspended out of school when they have attendance problems. Also, attendance definitions are vague and set locally.

Some data: SROs are rarely arrested, but when they are, *more than half* are arrested for sex offenses. The victims of those crimes are usually students at the schools at which the SROs work. https://t.co/5k4pIRjEzC thank you to @HaroldJordan_pa for sharing the article

In late November, @tb_times reported on a predictive policing system that identifies “potential criminals” using student data. We analyzed the program, and found several #studentprivacy violations. More from @anishareddy_ here:

The Pasco Sheriff’s Office puts schoolchildren on a list of potential future criminals if they:

• Get a D or an F
• Miss school too many times
• Witness household violence
• Have a parent who’s been to jail
• Are victims of abuse or neglect

Time for schools to do right by kids, and remove police. #counselorsnotcops

[ACLU of Pennsylvania @aclupa]

A1: Police presence in schools has greatly expanded over the last 20 years, and the harm they do to kids is significant. It’s time to remove police from our schools and end over-policing of students. #MaternalJustice #JuvenileJusticeMonth #CounselorsNotCops

[ACLU of Pennsylvania @aclupa]

A2: Schools have a responsibility to keep students safe. Police in schools increase arrest rates for minor offenses & can make school climates less inclusive and reduce trust, which undermines effective behavior management. #MaternalJustice #CounselorsNotCops
