@Linus200712345 I think the issue is more that people are unable to articulate why they actually believe it to be okay rather than it's them being hypocritical
Crazy to think that you have a 50% chance of dying today. There are only two possible outcomes: you either die or you don’t. So statistically speaking, that’s 50-50.
for the new york times magazine i wrote an essay about why everything is "gambling" now (the answer: actually everything is the statistical style now, and gambling is just how most of us understand that) https://t.co/TPO4BFFzfM
the basic problem with Linux distributions is that the people qualified to maintain them are generally very employable, so the people who have both the aptitude and free time to do it are adversely selected for mental illness
I don’t give a fuck what Sam Altman declares. Why are we just letting these tech bros make these decisions for us? When did we all decide we don’t have any agency?
I do not understand why the aggressive tech people don't understand this. The failure rate needs to be zero. Not 1%, not .1%. I am not letting copilot email my boss without oversight. The cost of the tail risks are way too high.
Game theory is a yuuuge scam, a field for bullshitters to write performative papers & cite one another. It doesn't generalize from "small world" models to "large world".
@stephen_wolfram showed (#RWRI lecture) that when one uses automata "dominant strategies" s.a. tit-for-tat become inferior.
The data center backlash is about much more than data centers and even AI itself.
Most people are just sick of being told that the future is something that happens to them.
This is exactly right. Something we talk about all the time on the podcast is proxy issues in politics: political debates that appear to be about one thing, but are proxies for a deeper anger. Data centers are such a proxy: as Jon says, it’s anger at being force fed the future.
not that china isn’t also overstuffing things with AI but this is a good example of how tech can focus on problems/needs people have in everyday life as opposed to coders making bots to replace themselves and being in disbelief when that happens and everyone else isn’t blown away
