The Ishbitzer asks a fascinating question: How can the Torah command a person, "Do not be afraid," if fear often arises on its own, without our choosing it? The heart feels what it feels. He answers that while we cannot always control what first appears in our hearts, our actions reveal what truly lies within them. A person who chooses not to dominate another, even when he has the power to do so, demonstrates genuine fear of Heaven. One who beautifies a mitzvah beyond the minimum shows authentic love of God. Our actions uncover the deepest truths of our inner world. So too, when the Torah says, "Do not be afraid," it is not demanding that we never experience fear. Rather, it is commanding us to remove imagined fears and false perceptions from our hearts. Deep within every Jew lies faith, but it can become hidden beneath distorted thinking. God does not desire fear born of illusion, as the Pasuk says, "I did not tell the descendants of Jacob to seek Me in emptiness." "Emptiness" refers to fears that exist only in our imagination. Instead, a person must know that there is a Master of the world who desires that His creations live with settled minds and inner composure. The Torah's command is not to fear imaginary threats.

The Heilige Ishbitzer is teaching something profoundly meaningful! The opposite of fear is not courage…it is clarity. Most of the battles we fight are not against reality but against the stories our minds invent about reality. Our imagination whispers, "You're not safe. You're not enough. Everything is falling apart," while our soul quietly reminds us, "There is a Ribbono Shel Olam, and you are not alone." Judaism is not asking us to suppress anxiety or pretend we never feel afraid. It is asking us to stop confusing our thoughts with the truth. The more we act from our deepest values instead of our loudest fears, the more we discover who we really are. Emotional maturity begins the moment we realize that not every feeling deserves to become a belief, and not every fear deserves to become a decision. That is what the Torah means by "לא תירא", don't let your imagination become your reality.

@clhubes Hard agree and there’s no magic solution but I do really like the Epic Books app… great alternative to TV (not that there’s anything wrong with TV and we do plenty of that too!) it reads allowed to them and has a cute progress tracker etc. just 1 small 💡 !
