John Swinney in 2001 on Henry McLeish £9,000 expenses scandal:
"You have got to be able to trust the First Minister."
Once it escalated to £36k+ Swinney said:
"People around Scotland will be staggered by the amount of money that is involved.
For the good of the Scottish parliament as a whole and the office of first minister, Mr McLeish should now resign his position."
John Swinney in 2026 on the SNP's £660,000 fundraising scandal:
"Nothing to see here, folks."
People will be angered, but not surprised, that John Swinney is seeking to hijack the finance committee to avoid scrutiny of the Scottish government budget.
Do they ever learn?
This scandal keeps getting worse for the SNP.
Swinney and Sturgeon’s complex web of stories is finally unravelling which is why a full independent inquiry is essential.
Clueless Jenny Gilruth roasted as new SNP finance secretary makes embarrassing Holyrood tax blunder. Scotland got the booby prize when this woman was put in charge of Scotland’s finance. https://t.co/xOyU9I3ksx
Questioned by Anas Sarwar on whether the SNP made fraudulent VAT refund claims when Murrell was in charge, John Swinney acknowledges that this may have happened. Which makes his continued resistance to a proper inquiry even harder to justify.
⚠️£600,000 gone.
⚠️A former SNP chief executive convicted.
⚠️Ministers found in contempt of court.
Yet Swinney's priority is blocking inquiries.
What exactly is he afraid of?
If your cause requires demonising pensioners, cancelling comedy shows and forcing performers to hire security guards, maybe it's time to rethink your tactics.

All whilst the SNP members 'ring fenced' independence fund was disappearing down a black hole.
Now the mask has slipped & the public can finally see what was really going on behind the SNP's carefully crafted image.
Peter Murrell has already secured a place in SNP history.
John Swinney now seems determined to add "Tax Dodger's Apologist" to his own CV.
Fraud, embezzlement, missing cash, and now questions over VAT claims.
The SNP never stops giving.
Holyrood is a Parliament whose powers are devolved from Westminster and can be amended or even withdrawn by the UK Parliament. If the SNP continue to act irresponsibly and illegally on financial matters then that is something that should be considered.
#DishonestJohn like #BrassNic demanded David McLetchie, Wendy Alexander & Henry McLeish all RESIGN over relatively small issues. This is a massive scandal. Swinney's position is untenable and it will only get worse in coming weeks. As will the briefing against him.
Oh, shut up, man!
We’ve all seen your “good intentions”, whether it’s saving Nicola Sturgeon’s neck, Michael Matheson’s or a host of other tawdry SNP shenanigans.
Just resign as planned …
One of the areas an independent inquiry must look at is the huge increase in the level of legal spend under Murrell. What else did the money go on? Coaching for witnesses against Alex Salmond? Private detectives to spy on
Alex and his allies?
