I have seen this and nothing gives me more rage than when a woman asks a question at a conference and the male chair answers "What the lady is actually trying to say is..." I have heard this numerous times and it's so insulting. #womeninstem#womeninoptics#EverydaySexism
Another thing that struck me, which is also represented in the data collected, is that I have no idea how to report harassment. I too would be wary to report anything, esp if it's someone significantly more senior who may have well established connections with the organisers
Thank you to @OpticalSociety & @SPIEtweets for undertaking this survey. It can't have been easy. Thank you for taking harassement (in all it's forms, for everyone) seriously. Far too many meetings / conferences just ignore the problem. Thank you for taking a stand.
I've just had a quick read but the thing that struck me most, more than the stats was the personal stories in Appendix I - sadly these are stories I've heard from friends & colleagues who have attended scientific meetings & conferences. #womeninSTEM#womeninoptics#LGBTinSTEM
Some interesting stats, which are not very surprising "over 9% of respondents say they experienced harassment at meetings or events hosted by the scientific societies. Of those who experienced harassment, 63% were women." #womeninstem#womeninoptics#LGBTinSTEM#optics#photonics
OSA promotes a professional and safe environment at all conferences. A few minutes of your time helps us assess the magnitude of harassment or bullying at conferences and helps us develop solutions.

Our group members @AleCarmichael@SharminNajnin and @BVohnsen participating at the #MyFunSummerSchool in Madrid these days with lots of learning about the eye, visual optics, and raising awareness about myopia in outreach workshops!! @IOSA_chapter @UCD_physics @UCDStudentChap
@nataliacanase@OpticalSociety @SPIEstudents @NiamhTalking90 Hey! Nice to meet you too. Cork Student Chapter should come to one of our meetups with DIT, DCU, NUIM & NUIG members / Chapters. We've also done outreach together. Here's a throw back pic of UCC & UCD (Tara & @choiceIrregular) doing outreach in South Africa in 2011
