I was reminded by a YouTube comment that 10 years ago today I left ScrewAttack to launch Game Attack.
Game Attack was kicked ass for about three and a half years... then came the "Summer of Love" of 2020. While all that nonsense was happening, I did a podcast with the guys I worked with and said I'd keep treating people the same way I always had - fairly, like a normal person.
After the podcast I got told "that wasn't good enough". I needed to "do better." Specifically by a group of 20-something college-age white girls who were very upset with me.
My business partner at the time sided with them. He told me I had to apologize to the audience because "they paid our bills." I said I wasn't apologizing for something I didn't do wrong. That was the effective end of the partnership.
One thing that always stuck in the back of my mind: I once told him I thought I had a good relationship with normal people because I was basically a normal guy. He said, "Are you fucking kidding me? You can't relate AT ALL to normal people."
Turns out his idea of "normal" is what we now consider woke. Mine, needless to say, is not. The irony about the split is that we NEVER discussed politics once prior to the Summer of 2020. All it took was a couple college aged privileged white girls with white guilt to break up something really great.
After I left, my former business partner rebranded Game Attack because he didn't want any association with me - even though I was long gone. Their audience shrank because they leaned all the way into "woke garbage" - a phrase they affectionately put on a t-shirt - and they've continued a downward trajectory. It is what it is.
Side Scrollers, on the other hand, reaches millions of REAL normal people on a month to month basis. That's validating because it turns out I am indeed just a normal guy.
Thank you to the commenter who reminded me of the 10-year mark. Leaving ScrewAttack and starting Game Attack was a big moment but it pales in comparison to what we're doing with @SideScrollers now.
We're coming back hitting the ground running with a new competition "VS Mode" on Wednesday.
Here's the 3 competitors we've announced so far. The fourth will be announced on Monday's show.
As I mentioned, I found a USB drive with a bunch of videos from E3 2012. I'll be uploading some of the videos here on this thread.
This first was a first impression of PlayStation All-Stars.
Found an old USB while cleaning & popped it in.
Turns out it's from 2013 and has all the classic Side Scrollers assets on it as well as alpha builds of AVGN Adventures and a BUNCH of videos from E3 2012.
It's like taking a step back in time.
Should I upload the E3 2012 videos here on X?
One more for now - our first thoughts on Mario Bros U for the Wii U.
I think this the first and only time I've said the word "Trollriffic"
More videos later maybe...
Also, I don't remember this but we had a Halloween update for AVGN Adventures just to put pumpkins on the chracters heads. Love that.
We need more silliness in games.
